Oh, that was useful! I'd had all three fields filled in and it would never detect the device when plugged in. Just setting the drive letter didn't enable auto-detect for my device, but drive-letter plus USB-device-ID did.

Thanks. It worked on my laptop, but not my desktop. I tried resetting the device profile, and coping the profile from my laptop, but neither worked. It seems that I might have to uninstall and reinstall.

Recent beta builds have corrected the slow scanning. It works perfectly now.

Yes, I can verify that the 1473 build does in fact fix the slow scanning issue for MTP devices. It is now significantly faster.

Unfortunately, the newest builds do not fix this problem for me on the Galaxy Nexus. Still scanning very slow, if at all.

Hey, I'm on MM 4.0.3.1476 and it takes forever to sync through MTP (using a Transformer Prime (Android 4.0.3), no option to use mass storage).
Also sometimes it synced to the wrong destination (sd card in tablet rather than tablet itself, might be my fault but I dont remember changing anything...).
Wouldn't it be possible to just check space available rather than scanning the whole device? Just doesnt seem to make sense...
I have a 64GB tablet with a few games installed; that must be gazillions of files, no wonder it takes forever (in the 15 minute range for building the file list).
Also, I notice it always copies the entire sync list, rather than doing an update of adding only files that are newly listed (so after building the file list 10-15 minutes, it takes 10-30 minutes to transfer ALL files in the sync list rather than 20 s for the 5 new ones).
Bottom line: 20-45 minutes for syncing a few new songs to the device.
Manually done in 5.
I have a playlist that contains all sync tracks, right now I just select all and send them to the device as syncing is pretty much useless because it takes too long. After all, if it will overrwite all files anyway, what's the point of prepping a file list in the first place?

On my cell (Galaxy S2) all works well when using Mass storage, also takes forever in MTP.

I was hoping this was resolved for all ICS devices, but it appears that's not case. One possible solution, make all your sync'd content go into a single root directory on the SD-Card, for example, I have /Andy/TV, /Andy/Movies, etc. That will at least tell MM to only look at one folder during scanning.
Also suggest you look at the solution I posted earlier in this thread:
http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... 66#p329774
This was really working for me before they fixed it (for my device) and would go back to it in a second if I experienced these same issues.

Had a great deal of trouble with synchronizing my Droid Bionic to MM. It was very slow for MTP and USB and had a tendency to either freeze or fail (sometimes partially, sometimes completely). I finally started pulling the microSD card out of the phone completely, putting it in a card reader and use MM to sync directly to the drive letter. That did the trick and seldom fails, but when I put the card back in the phone, the Android media scanner takes quite a while to do its job. The Music app will lag and freeze temporarily for quite a while until it finishes whatever it does behind the scenes... Until then, the whole phone can sometimes be unusable. So I've taken to just making sure I have 30 minutes to an hour to allow the device to do its thing after a resync. It works, but I have trouble understanding why it's so very slow. At this point, I think it may have more to do with the device than with MM, though...

Same problem here with my Galaxy Nexus. I sync to the device once, then update the playlist that is auto-synced to the device, then connect the device again, and syncing takes FOREVER. It's slow as molasses. The only workaround is to delete all of the files on the device, and then manually 'send' the playlist to the device. Hate to admit it but WMP works better for syncing...sadly.

I wonder what I am doing incorrectly. No matter what I do, I can not get my music to sync to my Galaxy Nexus. It hangs indefinitely on "Scanning." Scanning never completes for me. So I close MM tell it not to scan on connection. Then when I use your workaround and "Send" a playlist to my device, it hangs. I think it would eventually complete if I waited for hours. Is that the amount of time that you are waiting?

Something seems very wrong with the way MM scans the MTP device. It incorrectly reports 0 free space on the device (while 1.4 GB are still free).
I just noticed that for a split second when switching over from "My Computer" (or whereever) to the MTP phone, it does show the correct amount of free space.
Interestingly, it directly switches to display a full device and that exact amount (1.4 GB) as "to Sync".
There is NOTHING to sync really (as I had just previouosly synced thru mass storage, where MM always deletes and re-copies all files), plus if a full sync had to be done it would be 2.9 GB.
So something is very wrong with the way MM uses MTP, as my Windows explorer immediately displays the free/used values correctly.

Hope there will be a fix for that.

That being said, I found a Samba app for android that lets it be seen by windows as a network share over wifi. I mapped a drive directly to the /myMedia/ directory (technically it's /mnt/sdcard/myMedia/. Even though it's over wifi the scanning is now super-quick... why wouldn't it be -- it's only 3 directories -- and the changes are incremental, so it should not be excessively painful to sync day-to-day.
Bottom line, this will get me over the hump until either a) the next version of the ROM uses a drive letter rather than MTP, or b) MM4 can improve the scanning situation.
Thanks for the replies.
You could already identify your device by the drive letter over USB instead of MTP by simply disabling the WMDM plugin for your device and configuring the USBmass plugin.
Whats the Samba app you were using ACraig? I've got one but it only shares the root. I don't seem to be able to specify the Music folder all my music is synced to.
I'm using build 1476 and having the painfully slow sync/read problems too. I'm connecting the phone (Samsung GS2) in USB mode, have the usbmass plugin pointing the M:\ the drive letter it comes in on and its all good, until I try and read anything (even just sync back ratings takes about 30 minutes on 700 songs). It definately seems to be limited to MM as I can transfer stuff to the phone through USB outside of MM quick as....
Keen to try the samba mapping approach.

Hi, could you please generate debug log while the "Scanning..." is in process?

I don't mind doing this at all, but I have just been really busy. I will try to get it to you soon. Sorry.
