Half my filenames have the track #s in them "c:\my music\...\03 - filename.mp3", so when I auto tagged them by filename the tag and Library Title picked up the track# too.

What if I want the Title in the Library NOT to have the track #? i.e. "filename.mp3" Is there an easy way to rename them all instead of changing each tag individually?

Any thoughts on the filename and title formats with or without track #s? I'm thinking keep the *filenames* with them so I can know the track order if using Explorer to browse the library, and no track #s in the tags/Library so I can browse songs alphabetically...

You can rename the files without track numbers by highlighting the selection, choosing auto-organize (ctrl-r) and changing the mask from
etc/<Track#> - <Title> to etc/<title>

Auto-organize is very powerful this way... but try it out on one group at a time until you have the hang of it.

Also, I would recommend leaving the track number in the filename of the mp3 file AND have it in the proper track tag -- but not in the title tag.

Then you can browse alphabetically and still have your album tracks organized...

Then I can update the file's title tags based in the filename - but how would I show the Title in MM without the tracknum?

Or do I -
1) auto/rename all filenames without track#
2) update library so it won't have track #s
3) auto/rename all filenames *with* track#s
4) update *file title tags* so they include track #s
- would that work?

Now I'm not positive I understand your question, but here is an example.

I assume you have tracks with tracks #s in the title tag so it displays like this:



Highlight the tags and use CTRL-T to get rid of the track number (and put it in the right tag):



Then it won't show in the title of the library listing and you can, optionally, right lick on the track# column head in the library and turn it off to get this display (which I assume you want):



But the track filenames still have the track #:
C:\Storage\downloads\Horace Silver Quintet\The Jody Grind\01-The Jody Grind.mp3

no magic wand to get rid of the track number in the name if you have it on the file name.

you must go in to each song's properties and remove the track number that way.

then tell monkey not to update the tags unless the file date has changed.
so you wont get monkey changing them back on you.

but it is a one at a time removel of the track numbers from the title of the song.

unless some one has wrote the magic wand script for this? which i don't know if they did or not.
