Hi,

I have used Tag and Rename for a long time and am happy with it. However I tried Media Monkey and discovered that it seems to see tags that T&G doesn't. I had erased some Album name tags in T&G on both ID3v1 and v2, but the info still appears in MM? Anyone know whats going on? WM Player 11 doesnt see the tags either...

MM either has the tags still in the library database, or it has 'inferred' the metadata from the filename/path.

If the tags are correct in MM, you can 'sync' them back to the files by using tools > advanced tag management > sync tags.

This will update your files tags with what MM has in the database.

MediaMonkey still uses ID3v2.3 instead of the newer ID3v2.4. It also supports ID3v1.

The problem you face is that MediaMonkey stores tags in the database and the tags of the files. Inside the program MediaMonkey always uses the database values so until you update these values (Add/Rescan Tracks with appropriate settings) you won't see updates made by other programs.

To see the changes made by external applications, you'll have to use menu File > Rescan, or better use the File Monitor (in MediaMonkey Gold version).

I did delete and then re-generate the MM library and it still displays some tag information that doesnt appear in Tag&Rename and WMPlayer11. One thing I noticed is that for some reason if there are numbers in the file name/tag info then it generates a track number tag.

For example, 'nena - 99 red balloons'. It has no track number on purpose because it resides in a folder that contains random songs. However, MM assigns it a track tag 99. Similarly, 'the proclaimers - 500 miles' gets assigned track tag 50.

However, I still cannot understand where MM is finding the album tag information. It is obviously inferring the track number from the filename, but there is no album info in the filename that could be inferred!

The tags are correct for me in Tag&Rename, not in MM. So I will continue to use that. I was just worried that maybe for some reason the tag data in some files may be corrupted, or I might be using a slightly different ID3v2 - perhaps T&G is writing the tags in 2.4. Surely though if that was the case T&G would still show me tag information written in earlier versions?

Indeed, by default MediaMonkey infers tag properties also from the file name. This can be disabled/chosen in the options (menu Tools > Options... > Library > When adding files to the library).
You can change the specific infer behaviour in MediaMonkey's configuration file, but that is not a very useful thing to do.
If you say that your files are tagged OK (and MediaMonkey doesn't have to infer anything from filename/playlist), then disable "Infer tag properties" and all will remain in MediaMonkey as it is in the files.

As Lowlander said, MediaMonkey doesn't yet support all newest id3 tags (newest id3v2.4 fields), but MM 3.0 is expected to catch up in that area.
