Hi.

I'm at a bit of a mental block when it comes to using certain tags, particularly original date (year) and original (album) title. I was just wondering what the exact purpose and use they were for. For a while now I've been using them specifically for the purpose of tagging cover songs, but then I realized that they could used for other things-- original performing date for live tracks or original dates of tracks on a compilation, for example. Same goes for original (album) title.

I wouldn't want them to coincide and mess up the tags, though, in the case of live cover songs on a compilation, for example, so I was wondering if this was a common problem. Should I continue my tagging of cover songs solely, or should I get down compilation/live dates as well?

On the topic of tag specification, I was also wondering what other MM users use the involved people field for. I've been using it for featuring artists, e.g.

Artist: AFI; Dexter Holland
Involved People: Dexter Holland (Of the Offspring)


ONE more question; I know this may be nitpicking, but what is the use for the "Illustration" image type for album art, if anybody even uses it.

I think you might want to check up on the ID3v2 specifications to see what these fields were meant for.

I personally think that you should use these fields in matter that best fits you as it's your music.

Ah, you're probably right. I've been comfortable in my music tagging system until I ran into this situation, though. I just think it'd be great to also see what song in a compilation came from what original album or what date a concert was, but when I run into the problem of a cover song overriding it, e.g.

Track Title: Rattlesnake Shake
Artist: Aerosmith
Date: 11/1991
Original Date: 1969
Original Artist: Fleetwood Mac
Original Album Title: Then Play On
Song Version: Cover; Live
Album Type: Compilation

The possibilities are:
Which Original Album by this artist was this track found on?

Which Original Album by the covered artist was this track found on?

What was the Original Date of the track that was found on a previous album by this artist?

What was the Original Date of the track that was found on the album of the covered artist?

and

What was the Original Date of the concert for this live performance?

I know the new Original Date field was just released for MM3, but now I'm wishing there were more date fields.
