I.e. the text label at the bottom of the Playlists tab and the text label at the bottom of the dialog e.g. 393 files, 2.4 GB, 18:07:55 include apparently track files but not the playlist files.

Not necessarily a failure, though, at least with certain devices. iPods' playlists are not sent as files but as part of the device database.

I would have thought that uses storage space and hence should figure in the MM storage space figure.

Whether it does or not is probably irrelevant, it would probably be the difference between 2.4 gigs or 2.405 gigs.
