Losing WAV Tags

Hi,

I have just updated to Gold 3.0.5.1187

Since then when I edit WAV tags they appear to work, but if you switch away from that folder and back they are gone, they also become <unknown> on my Sonos digital music player. The files still play OK, and if you look at them in a hex editor there does appear to be tag information in there. The file modification date also changes when you do it so it definitely appears to be writing something. Also if you re-select the blank tracks in MM and select properties most of the information comes back apart from album title. It still gets lost again as soon as you move away though.

I have only just discovered the increment track number script, could that be related?

I tried setting the:

[WAVTagging]
ReadWriteUTF8=0

flag in the ini file, update tags is checked in the options dialogue and I've tried both ASCII only and the +UTF16. Still nothing.

Media is held on a server running Windows Server 2003, but generally hardware, permissions etc have been running fine up until now and I haven't changed anything.

Please help, it effectively renders MM useless for me and I had really got to appreciate it, hence buying Gold.

I am having exactly the same problem! I have no scripts running, I'm new to using MM. However, it's only doing it to certain files. Primarily files with lossless codecs, however there are some that still work. it is very strange.

This strange behavior can happen if you "File Monitor" your collection and has the Tools->Options->Library->"Infer track properties" selected. If so just deselect it.

I've tried rescanning - no success.

I also tried turning off the Tools->Options->Library->"Infer track properties" option.

Again, no success, all that happens is that it now doesn't re-tag the files when I open the properties dialogue like it did before.

Looks to me like it is writing the tags incorrectly because there is something in the file, it is just that MM nor my Sonos players can read them.

Thanks for the suggestions though, any more?

The option was turned on for me, however it did not fix the problem either. Upon closer inspection of the files, I have noticed that a select few files I attempt to auto-tag, all of which are lossless, appear to become corrupted. They lose their entire file size. for example one 32mb file, after auto-tag was ran, became about 500kb.

well there is the off chance you need an office update or some such thing from microsoft.

they did updates this thursday for october so try going to windows updates then click on their link for microsoft updates and get that bigger update scanner looking for you, it will find tons of stuff that the windows update site does not find.

@HoveBloke,
Perhaps it has todo with that you store your music on a server?
Try to install the debug version of the latest MM and send in a debug log to the developers as described here:

@Darkdisease,
Do you also store your music an a server or an external drive?
Perhaps you also can create a debug log?

I can't find where to get the debug build so I can generate log files. Can anyone point me there please?

Some more details I should have mentioned before, I am running MediaMonkey itself from a user account on Vista 32 bit with SP1 and all other current patches applied (A Sony Vaio VGN-CR31S laptop). The music is, as I mentioned before, stored on a Server 2003 box with RAID storage and the network is wired Gigabit Ethernet. None of this has changed recently though and I have not had a problem before.

I've sent some log files, I can't reproduce the initial problem again though. I still can't tag the already corrupted files so I sent a log from an attempt to do that and another from a normal, successful re-tag.

One last piece of information though. I went back to the Microsoft Update page and found an update for my RealTech NIC which wasn't in the auto-apply section. I have downloaded and updated it now. I don't think it can really be a hardware issue though because all the files are obviously broken in exactly the same way. Fortunately they all still play, I haven't lost anything and I have backups.

The problem is quite hard to reproduce evidently. If I sent in one of the already corrupted WAV files would that help you find precisely what is wrong with it? One is less than 1MB (Yep, 14 seconds long).

yep send one to the developers and tell them what it is for. they can find the error in the file if any.

also about the microsoft update site. that auto download for updates is only for security updates not all updates
so its a good idea to check the site once a month to see if any were put up there for your system. :)

@HoveBloke
The best way is to open support Ticket (unless you already have).

Thanks for all your help. I've raised a ticket and hope to get a resolution in due course.

@Hovebloke
I have received your file, and after analyze it looks that your files have common issue We will try to analyze this behavior and possibly make support. BTW MM do not lose tags but MM writes correct WAVE WAVEfmt Info Chunk that is used for more than decade.

Than you for reporting this.
