Iphone sync play counts and ratings

Hi,

I was wondering if Media Monkey can recognize play counts on the Iphone and sync them back to the music library. Can it also sync ratings performed on the Iphone and sync it back to the music library? This doesn't seem to be happening.

That info should be synced back (when autosync is used) but many have reported problems in this area (even including when using iTunes to sync, which may indicate an iPhone/Touch firmware issue).

Aaw, really? That's too bad because it would be so useful. Here's hoping that gets fixed cause it really helps in the creation of playlists and other types of music library management.

Thanks for the info.

I have found that playcounts *do* seem to get sync'd back from my iPhone 2.2 (jailbroken)
Havn't tested with ratings yet.

Yet recently I did another sync, and found that this time my play sync's *didn't* get sync'd.

Rather annoying :(

It never works for me, at least you get it sometimes :(

I think its an iPhone/Touch issue, not an MM issue, since it has always worked when I sync a plain iPod and also because it seems to be a common issue with the Touch and iPhone even when people use iTunes.

Anyone who's interested who has a jailbroken iPhone / iTouch and uses last.fm could have a go at my script:
http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... &sk=t&sd=a

There is a last.fm scrobbler avaliable on Cydia for iPhones - "scrobble" or "scrobbled" - if one doesn't work try the other.
Then weekly, after last.fm updates it's weekly charts, run my script, and provided your last.fm statistics were reasonably close to your MM database, your MM play counts will be updated!

I know it's bizzare you can scrobble to last.fm but not update play counts when syncing, but sadly we can't do anything about that I think :(
This also won't do anything with ratings.

Read the thread guys :)

From all reports, this is an iPhone firmware issue, nothing mediamonkey can fix.

Yes I was wondering though if the new iphone OS 3.0 is going to fix the issue?

Or more to the point if anyone has any clue or idea that it may fix the issue....

Wish I knew this before I bouth the ipod touch though!! Only bought it yesterday!!

I have the syncing [play counts / last played / rating] issue.
I've just restored my ipod to test. Here's what I've done:
Freshly restored ipod.
Add an *MP3* album to a specific playlist in MM.
In sync options for the ipod touch, sync only that playlist.
Do autosync on ipod.
Music is transferred.

Disconnect, listen to music on ipod, rate etc.

Reconnect to pc.
Check ipod contents using MM, applied ratings & playcount & playdates are shown correctly as last listened to/edited on ipod.
Resync with MM, applied ratings & playcount & playdates are correctly synced and added to my library.
Trying the above solely with iTunes syncs ratings/placount etc. just fine.

If I try the same on a *FLAC* album, which is autoconverted for the ipod, the last two steps from above become:
Check ipod contents using MM, no applied ratings or playcounts or playdates are shown.
Resync with MM, no ratings or playcounts or playdates are passed back to MM.
It would seem MM doesn't re-associate autoconverted files on the ipod, with original format files in it's library?

I would disagree with the statement that this is an issue with the touch firmware. I spent a lot of time reading through various Apple/iPod/iPhone related forums and while it does appear that there was an issue, it was resolved some time ago. From personal experience, I can say that I have never had trouble syncing ratings, play counts or last played date when using <shudder> iTunes to do the syncing with my touch, but when using MediaMonkey, alas I have rarely had success. The only success I have had with MediaMonkey is when using small test AutoPLaylists that limit the number of synced songs to less tahn about 300. When using my normal AutoPlaylist which contains around 3000 songs, I have never had a successful sync of ratings, play count or last played date.

I understand the huge task MediaMonkey has in trying to reverse engineer what Apple is doing during syncing, so I'm certainly not trying to throw them under the bus, but I do believe there is a MediaMonkey issue to be resolved here. Of course, if Apple would just release documentation about how this is supposed to work, we'd all be happy.

I am intrigued, I have many .flac albums and wondered on Monday if the flac files was the cause of the problem.

I will do a retest also I think and limit myself to pure mp3 albums and report back what I find.

Now to wipe clean my iPod again!!

I can confirm that mp3s copied straight to the iphone without re-encoding do not sync playcounts or ratings.

Still find it amusing I can sync with last.fm but not with my iPhone :D
