1282 Crashing

I'm having stability issues with the 1282 version of MM and have experienced several crashes without being able to consistently repeat them.

I don't see where it should matter, but prior to when 1282 started crashing, I did reinstall some prior versions using saved copies of my database from when those versions were originally installed. I do this frequently to test differences between new and old versions. It has not caused issues in the past as long as the correct database for that version is the one being tested. When I was finished with my tests, I reinstalled 1282 using the current database. I only keep one version of MM installed at any time.

The first time MM crashed, I was trying to add 22 .mp3 files to my Library using drag & drop from Windows Explorer. MM successfully added all 22 files and Auto-organized them, but failed to analyze the volume as set in my options. I restarted MM and it immediately began analyzing the volume of the tracks added before the crash. After it finished, I added the remaining files and everything worked fine until I tried to exit MM where I got a message "There are background processes running. Terminate them ?". There were no processes showing on the progress bar, MM appears to be idle with nothing playing, there's no editing being done and my system is abysmally slow with MM using 85-95% of the CPU and 81M of memory. If I answer "No", the message goes away, MM seems to run normally but continues to consume most of my system resources. If I answer "Yes", MM appears to close down, but it leaves the MediaMonkey.exe process running. I had to terminate MediaMonkey.exe using the Task Manager to get it to release the system resources.

I restarted MM and spent several hours showing my wife how MM works without any problems.

Later, I tried to add 99 .flac files using Windows Explorer to drag & drop them onto my Library. MM crashed part way through adding the files. Again, it successfully added 71 of the 99 files and Auto-organized them, but failed to analyze the volume. When I tried to restart MM, the system told me it was already running. Again, I used Task Manager to determine that the MediaMonkey.exe process was still running and using 85-95% of the CPU. I terminated the process using the Task Manager.

I restarted MM and it immediately began analyzing the volume of the 71 .flac files added before the previous crash. After it finished with that process, I used drag & drop to add the remaining .flac files and MM processed them all properly. Next, I tried to convert all 99 .flac files to 320k .mp3 format. MM crashed after completing 77 of the 99 files. Same result as previous crashes -- MediaMonkey.exe is still running in the background using 85-95% of the CPU. Terminated MM and restarted it. Converted remaining .flac files with no problems. When I tried to exit MM, got the message "There are background processes running. Terminate them ?" again. Answered "Yes", then used Task Manager to terminate MediaMonkey.exe.

Restarted MM, played some songs, did some Track editing and exited with no errors or problems.

Is anyone else having this or similar stability issues with this version ? If not, any ideas on where to look for causes in my system would be greatly appreciated.

Error message I get is : Mediamonkey - Audio Library has stopped working. I was updating mp3 files (not FLAC) when it happened.

Wow it crashes every 5 minutes now. I strongly suggest you do not upgrade to 1281 or 1282. I went back to 1280 and we'll see how it goes...

Teapot, Etheriau,

I'm trying to replicate, but I'm not optimistic. MM 1282 is rock solid on my system.

Can you:
a) uninstall all addons
b) generate a debug log of the crash using dbgview as described at:
http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... ?f=6&t=341
That'll give us the information needed to figure out why this is happening. Thx.

btw, do both of you have background auto-organize functionality running?

Yes, I have background Auto-organize on -- each track is renamed and moved to another HDD.

I reverted to 1280 and all the instability stopped immediately. Unfortunately, I don't have time to do more testing until tonight or tomorrow. I got help on how to run MM without add-ons, so will be sure to do that during future testing.

In spite of any problems I've encountered, it's still one of the VERY best pieces of software that I've ever used !!!

I had a little time this morning to do a few more tests and accidentally discovered that, at least on my system, I can consistently crash ANY 3.1 version since build 1275.

Try to expand either the Artist or Genre nodes of the Library tree beyond one level. On 3.0.7.1191, it works as expected. On any 3.1 version, including 1283, MM will stop responding for about a minute, then produce 5 errors. If you clear the 5 errors, it just repeats. If you don't, it stops responding and has to be terminated with Task Manager. I tested builds 1275-1283, both with and without any add-ons. Results were always the same.

It works fine for me. Have you tried with the regular build instead of the debug build?

Teapot, Etheriau,

I tried with background auto-organize enabled + the file monitor + tagging (Album Art & Replay Gain) of hundreds of tracks, but I can't replicate.

Hopefully you can generate a debug log of this...

Thx.

Teapot, Etheriau,

I think we've reproduced the problem: http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=6134

Try disabling filtering to see if the problem is resolved. We plan on including a fix in build 1285.

Thanks.

Also fixed http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=6141 in build 1286.

Once 1286 is posted, please confirm that your issues have all been solved. Thanks.

Rusty,
When I upgraded to 1283 it resolved the crashing issue I was experiencing on the desktop. It's been analysing volumes on more than 10 000 flac songs without issues...

Today I'm at work with the laptop so we'll see how it goes with 1285. Going back to 1280 from 1282 on the laptop had also solved the issue on Monday.

Both of my machinbes run Windows 7 x64 (One RC the other a fresh Ultimate install)

thx

May have been the auto-sync issue I was having. Just tried it now and 1285 looks good so far!!!

FYI -- I'm using 1282 on Windows 7 x64 and it is rock solid on my computer. I'm in the process of cleaning up my database and getting all the tags right and adding artwork. My library is 100% .mp3 files and just over 35,000 songs. Thought you might want a little positive feedback, you're obviously working very, very hard.
