My music library is all messed up

MODS - please feel free to move this thread at your discretion.
Haven't really posted here but I've been using MM for years and LOVE it!
I apologize if this has been covered before; in fact I'm sure it has, but had trouble finding what I need through search.
I have an external HD with lots of music, plenty on my laptop HD, duplicates, disorganization, mislabeled files, etc. I have lots of the same songs but want to keep the higher quality copies and not sure which is which.
It's a freaking mess!
I tried using iTunes and boy did that make things worse! Now some of my tracks have the folder labeled as the artist and so forth.
Any ideas? Does MM analyze song content to determine how to tag files? Is there a program that does this at all?
Thanks!

Regarding dupes:

You can also try my Tagging Inconsistencies script, link in signature, It finds stuff that needs attention.

Having nothing to do with MM you can use physical location to organize. It is more work but is more solid approch. That way you do not have to rely on software. I just had to delete my database. I would have been totally screwed if my music was just in one big pile. Plus you can't access the music as quickly.
Bad move going to itunes after MM. I am sure you will discover more problems than just messing up your database.

Yeah I should have known that. Fortunately I don't play with ratings or any of that stuff so I'm hoping that organization is the worst of my worries.

I was one of the earliest adopters of this expensive and I wish I had wrote on this forum then, but years later I'm still cleaning up the ' automagically screwed ' absolutely depressing frustrating and single most destructive and life time wasting regretful thing I have ever done in my entire life.
This software has totally ruined my itunes library in every single possible facet!
It added hundreds of different super specific genres that totally makes the genre filter on itunes worthless, some songs are all by themselves in a entire genre.
It totally ruined the album artwork on thousands of songs, and did all those things that multiple posters to this forum have stated like orphaning many songs from the rest of it's album and making albums take up to as much as a single NEW album per song per true album therefore making your ALBUMS FILTER on itunes basically the same thing as the SONGS filter of itunes puts out.
it AUTOMAGICALLY made my life a living hell because it's been like 3 years since i installed and paid for their crap and i'm only a fraction of the way to fixing the problems, and many of the problems will NEVER be fixed. I've even started my entire library fresh again, and the problems are haunting me.. and that's the most depressing part.. Because I had to START a new library I've lost all my Genius data, my play counts, my custom everything, the part of itunes that took my 9 years to get just right is now GONE forever because this software was absolutely stupid.
To make things worse I was working very very very very closely with their tech support so much so that I even emailed them on a daily basis my entire Library database info, per their requests.. so I spent like 100 hours of my life trying to HELP Their tech support department with handing over my personal data.. oh ya including crash reports data because it crashed all the time.. and for all my help my life my time my money they never gave a refund they never said sorry they never solved anything.
AMEN TO ALL THAT AGREE WITH ME
DOWN WITH AUTOMAGIC CRAP
I've noticed a CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT is being filed, and I"M ON BOARD!
May we all get out lives back as they were PRIOR TO BEING AUTOMAGICALLY by AUTO-TUNE-WRECKER APP OF THE MILLENIUM.

Unfortunately MediaMonkey doesn't do anything automatigically if you don't tell it to.
segsteady wrote:It added hundreds of different super specific genres that totally makes the genre filter on itunes worthless, some songs are all by themselves in a entire genre.
MediaMonkey doesn't add genre's to songs unless you used an Addon to do so. MediaMonkey will only read Genres already stored in the files tags.
To fix you can remove the Genres from the Genre node in MediaMonkey.

MediaMonkey didn't orphan the tracks, the tracks lack proper Album Artist tagging and thus show orphaned. Fixing the Album Artist tag fixes the orphaned tracks problem. This can be done automagically, but I haven't tried this:
http://www.mediamonkey.com/wiki/index.p ... erties/4.0
Note that the option to scan file directories for Artwork under Tools > Options > Library can give some issues if files aren't properly organized. For best results tracks of an Album should be in their own folder with the external Artwork (if you use external Artwork). Also note that iTunes use a proprietary (not compatible with others) method for storing Artwork.

I'm really confused by this post. Are you talking about MediaMonkey here? You're complaining about "auto-magical" tagging, which MediaMonkey doesn't even do. That was the point of the thread in the first place.

He/she is talking about another software company called "Tune up" they have a music organizer called "Automagic". They must have had serious problems because they have rebuilt the program from the ground up!!
I don't know anything about this program but wanted to clarify that he/she was NOT slating MM.
