Duplicate files on Playlist

I would like to get a warning with option to do allow or not allow duplicates when I'm adding a file to a playlist that's already on it. The problem is when adding multiple files to a playlist with multiple duplicates. Maybe same warning with option to do allow or not allow duplicates for any of the songs added.
As part of the playlist management I'd like to see a menu item to filter out duplicates on the playlists.
The option of duplicates needs to be available as sometimes you do want duplicates.

Good idea.

PLEASE implement a fix for this, as it's annoying to deal with duplicates not only in your playlists, but also on your iPod when you sync.
1 request, 1 bug ?

In my opinion these are two different things:
The first is a request for showing a warning when adding a track to a playlist when it's already on that playlist. Hopefully you can choose to get a warning - some people prefer to have tracks multiple timeson the same playlist.
The second is probably a 'bug' in the way MediaMonkey synchronises playlists to the iPod (and possibly other devices). When you synchronise multiple playlists containing duplicate tracks (some songs are on more than one playlists) the tracks are copied to the iPod more than once as well.
It makes me wonder how MediaMonkey knows which playcounter or rating to modify when it synchs the iPod changes back to MediaMonkey... seems like an excellent opportunity for bugs there...

Yup, particularly with the playcounter.

I really hope this gets fixed, just a little error message would suffice...

This request is almost two years old. Is there a reason why this have not been implemented into MM yet? It would be very useful to have a warning when adding files to playlist if it is already on it.

We'll try to fit it into MM 2.5.

Duplicate removal

Hi,
I've reviewed this and other posts re. duplicate removal functionality and wanted to validate our ideas before we move forward. The needs seem to be:
1) A means of knowing if tracks added to a playlist are duplicates
1b) and optionally removing them
2) A means of knowing if duplicates exist in a playlist
3) A means of manually removing all duplicates from a playlist
4) A means of filtering duplicates that exist in any playlist so that it can be played without editing it to remove duplicates
5) Another need that I have is to consider a duplicate a 'duplicate' only when it appears within x amount of time of a previous instance of that track on the playlist.
The proposed implementation is as follows. Any feedback would be appreciated:
Short term (2.5):
Satisfy usecase 1), 3), and 5)
In Tools|Options|Library|Playlists, in the Playlists box add:
[x] Warn when duplicate tracks are added in close proximity
Proximity Detection Threshold: _[2]_ hrs
If the user adds tracks to a playlist and the tracks are duplicates, then they appear in the playlist in Red, and the user has the option of manually deleting the original or the duplicate.
In the Context Menu for playlists/Now Playing nodes, add a menu item to 'Remove Duplicates'. If the user clicks 'Remove Duplicates' then any duplicate titles after the first instance of a track in the playlist will be removed. (Note it may be a better idea to delay this until the Medium Term implementation--see below--since in the short term, there'd be no visible feedback re. which tracks are duplicates).
Medium Term (2.5 or 2.6):
Satisfy all usecases.
In Tools|Options|Library|Playlists, in the Playlists box add:
[x] Warn when duplicate tracks are in close proximity
[ ] Skip playback of duplicate tracks in close proximity
Proximity Detection Threshold: _[2]_ hrs
In this case, whenever the user opens a playlist/Now playing list, the contents of that playlist are analysed for duplicates. Moreover, if 'Skip Playback...' is enabled, then a track that appear in duplicate on the playlist appears in red but is 'dulled' to indicate that it won't be played.
Also, in the Now Playing node, 'Duplicates' would be determined based on 'Last Played' timestamps (i.e. not just internal to the playlist itself).

I'm glad that something is being done about this! I couldn't really tell from the plans, but will the user get some type of warning notification so that they can stop the track from being added to the playlist, period, regardless of the proximity? (I hope so.)
Sophisicated planning for handling this problem and MM users appreciate the effort going into this.
Duplicate detection

Yeah, the idea is that the short term solution would warn you when you added tracks that were in close proximity within the playlist by causing the track to turn red. I think this is preferable to a dialog-box warning, since the latter will interrupt workflow, and more often than not, the user would have intended to insert a duplicate.
The idea in the medium term solution is that MM would warn you (via coloured tracks in the NP dialog) when tracks in the list are in close proximity to others that had been played recently (and optionally skip playback of those tracks). The only aspect of this that I'm not fully comfortable with is that as a DJ, you might listen to a bunch of tracks before a party, and wouldn't want the Now Playing playlist to be compared vs tracks played prior to the party.

... or in case of radio stations that do not want to play tracks with close proximity of 4 hours except "Song Of The Week" is played every hour.
I also agree with that solution said by Rusty.
Wishlist - Provide a filter to view Duplicates

Like like all the suggestion for Duplicates.
Another thing on the wish list I would like to see is a filter to view which songs in an play list is
a. extact duplicate (same song title, Artist and album)
b. Duplicate Songs (same song title) (same or other artist / albums)
what to you think.

How is this coming along? Am still very anxious for its implementation.
