MM4 IFO and VOB files no sound and DVD menu not working

Hello,

I'm trying to play an uncompressed rip of a DVD where all the files of the DVD are in a VIDEO_TS folder (you can google for this type of rip).

When I play any VOB file in the folder I get beautiful video but no sound. Below is a directory listing of a typical VIDEO_TS folder for this DVD.

Is MM4 programmed to "reassemble" the files of a ripped DVD / VIDEO_TS folder (from the IFO table of contents) and play them as though they were a coherent unit DVD? The DVD format seems to split up the video into 1GB "chunks" as VOB files but when you pop in a DVD you dont see that, but on a computer you do. Also why no sound?

Also if I play the IFO file, it correctly displays the DVD credits and menu, but when I click "Play movie" on the MM4 video screen it tells me to insert the DVD like its not navigating to the first VOB file after I click play (clicking on the video screen DVD menu not the MM4 play button). It does this for all my rips.

I think I used dvdfab to rip this last year, but I've used other ripprs and the results with MM4 are the same no matter what program I used to extract the DVD to a VIDEO_TS folder. You can try this yourself, there should be a way for MM4 to play a VIDEO_TS folder as though it were a coherent DVD with a working chapter menu.

No sound is probably caused by missing AC3 codec. But MM should redirect you to AC3 filter download page in this case, you say, it does not work for you? If so, please make and send me debug log.
I've never met "insert the DVD" error, for all my DVD rips (with VIDEO_TS structure, playing VIDEO_TS.IFO) it works ok. Please, send the debug log from this attempt too. Does Media Player Classic 32b play the DVD ok?
Note, MM4 has now only very basic playback of DVD, it should be improved in future versions - issue 6967

I've found similar issue, tracked as http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=8183

Thanks, I did install the codec pack right after I installed this beta and I know that works because I am able to play other file types that I never could before (like FLV). After I posted this I realized that for the "insert DVD" message I had played the wrong IFO file, in other words I did not play the root VIDEO_TS.IFO file, I must have accidentally played one of the segmented IFO files. So disregard this problem, it was my mistake. When I play the root IFO file the DVD menu seems to work properly. But I still get no sound. And I did not get a message to go download a codec, shouldn't the AC3 codec have been in the codec pack I installed?

Also a typical DVD player usually has a transport control called "Disk Menu" that always allows you to get to the DVD menu even in the middle of a movie. Does MM4 offer a "Disk Menu" button when it is playing a DVD or VIDEO_TS folder? Also will MM4 database index the VIDEO_TS folder as a single media file? Instead of indexing each VOB file individually which would be confusing when you look at the library, not sure if MM4 can treat a folder like VIDEO_TS as though it were a "media file" instead of a folder in terms of the library.

Thanks. As mentioned the "insert DVD" message was my mistake, I launced the "wrong" IFO file. When I play the root IFO file the DVD menu links work. It might be helpful if MM4 gave a warning when it finds a user launcing one of the segment IFO files when the parent folder is called VIDEO_TS and a VIDEO_TS.IFO file already exists as a sibling file in the folder. And warn them that they should be launcing VIDEO_TS.IFO instead.

Thank you, I just installed the AC3 codec and I now have sound, the DVD menu is working great (after I figured out the issue was my mistake by selecting the wrong IFO file).

It appears that all the other things I mentioned are on your "to do" list including how MM4 is going to now learn how to index "folders" as a single unit, instead of files And also I assume you will be adding transport controls for getting to the disk menu and chapter selecting, etc. Or if not transport controls they may be nodes in the library tree, or whatever.

OK, thanks. AC3 and MPEG2 decoders are not included in our codec pack because of quite high license fees.

Thanks! i had exactly the same problem (no sound) and after the installation of the AC3 codec everything worked perfectly well!!!

Thanks, the Ac3 filter download also fixed my DVD sound.

Wish it wasn't another installed program >.<
