Auto-Sync List: Generating playlists for all artists

I'm syncing my collection with a USB Mass Storage Device and want to generate playlists on the device for every artist. I've learned so far that the "generate playlists for artist" option (options/playlists) only works for artists, that are checked in the auto-sync list of the device. But since there are some hundreds of artist I'd like to check all artists at once by checking the node "artist & album artist". But this is not possible, even though it is possible to uncheck checked artist by a mouse click on the node. Did I miss something? Thanks for your help and please excuse my poor english.
