1672 and service: access denied

I think this is a newer problem for the service. As I had *locking* issues previously (1671) I had uninstalled the service. With 1672 I reinstalled the service and haven't seen the locking issue.

On my server the MMS was running as reported by task manager/services. Turned on my sony blu-ray and it did not see the MM Icon. I tried my MMA and it saw the MM Icon. I selected it and got access denied.

I started MMW and both MMA and Sony were very happy ... I can create a log if you think it will help

By the way, as before the Service shows 'started' in Task Manager while MMW is running

OK, as before, are you sure that the service is installed on the same account as we were already solving here: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... 47#p378021 ?

Yes .. and nothing was *continuously* solved. This problem seems to crept up after a while .. after many reboots etc.

Did you grant access to the device?
i.e. do you see "Access Denied" also when running MM standard way (not as service) ?
You can configure the access via Options -> Media Sharing -> <Server> -> UPnP/DLNA tab
Is your device enabled there?
Is the "Share automatically..." checkbox enabled?

Ludek, i should have been more complete but since i hadn't changed those settings i didn't think to say again.

It is set to share automatically. There are actually only 2 devices checked enabled but more devices connect than that (probably just not connected right now).

Once again this seems to happen in 2 instances:

1) when service runs while MMW is running
2) if the device is connected to the network wirelessly (haven't tried hard coded) to router (primary named Example) and MMW is running connected to the extender (named Example_ext). MMW has no problem connecting to NAS running hard coded to router. I think i posted about this elsewhere

Thanks for the follow .. be you are as tired of this as i am <G>

It still sounds to me like if the service is running from another account otherwise it would be stopped properly and mainly would use the same settings as in case of running MediaMonkey.exe , but it is still not clear from your reply whether you see the "access denied" also when service is not running and you run MediaMonkey the standard way?

Well all i can tell is is what i did.

1) click install
2) prompted with 'password for user dsig' I entered my password.

that is it ... if that is not the *proper* method then i don't know what else you want.

Yes, this is the proper method and actually by using this method both MM service and standard MM uses the same account MM data, so there is no reason why should behave differently.

Therefore I was asking:

1) to verify what we were veryfing here: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... 47#p378021
Namely,
Task Manager -> Services tab -> [Services...] button -> MediaMonkeyService -> Log on) , is there the corect account as installed by MM, probalby yes?
If you click Task Manager -> Processes -> [Show processes from all users] you should see MediaMonkey.exe instance running on account "dstig", is that correct for both MM service and standard MM?

2) If you run MM.exe normally, does it behave same way like the service? i.e. do you see "Access Denied" or not?

3)
Once again this seems to happen in 2 instances
Should I understand that the "Access Denied" doesn not always happen, but only sometimes?
To ensure, by "Access Denied" you mean probably that trying to browse MM server shows "Access Denied" container on the client, right?
Probably debug log would show more.

Ludek .. this might be a little long but I just want you to *see* what happens this AM

My system was running as usual. MMW is playing a doctor who episode. The service is not installed. Also running at this time are TheBat (an email client), Vuze (torrent client (no uploading/downloading), FireFox (serveral tabs) and Windows Messager "process".

1) I Tools->Options->DLNA and click Install Service.
2) Window pops up with "blah blah ... Please input your account (Dsig) password:".
3) I enter my password for Dsig
4) The windows message box pops up with 'do you want this program ...'. I try to click YES but the button does not highlight/select. Neither the yes/no button do anything. The system X does nothing. I have to rightclick the second MM icon on task bar to close it.
5) I try this several times to no avail. Close some some programs still no good.
6) Shut everything down and rebooted (included most current windows update)
7) Started my email client (always running) and firefox (always running) and MMW.
8) Tried to install the service again and once again it locked on the windows message box. So I shut everything down except MMW and the Windows Messanger client.
9) Tried to install the service and this time the Windows Message box does accept the YES button. I sit and wait for a bit but it doesn't come back with the 'installed' message box nor does the button change as it used to. As you can see from the image below it did install.

Image

If I go back into Tools->Options->DLNA window now it does show the button as Uninstall Service.

10) Going into Task Manager->Services I see that MediaMonkey service shows
MediaMoneky Service
(no status)
Automatic
Local System

11) to test it now i reboot again .. start fresh. Then I start MMW and check there services information. As you can see below the service IS running while MMW is running.

Image

Now to answer your questions
1) It is exactly as show in the image at that link 'http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... 47#p378021'.
2) No with 2 cavet.
a) As it is right now (mmw & service) using MMA. If I uPnP I get 2 MM library but both of them give me access denied. This will be same on any of my dlna devices

b) If i stop (or remove) the service, shut down MMW and restart it .. OOPS to my surprise I am getting Access denied again. Was working yesterday without service.

This is NEW behavior. I have accessed the dlna from MMA when service is removed.

The next image shows the UPnP/DLNA tab. Currently my phone with MMA is reporting an IP of 192.1.168.14 but that doesn't show anywhere ...

Image
Image

And now .. after a 10+ minute wait (while on a couple phone calls) I once again MMA-UPnP and now I do not get access denied. AND while the menu of items are showing, back in MMW the DLNA and Server tabs have not changed. Still the IP does not show. I actually started a movie and at the point it did show up on the server tab. But not all the access denied from today.

Maybe I am expecting the wrong things. Maybe this is all a wild goose chase as they way (ummmm goose ... maybe for christmas :) ).

It just always seems that the service (and even at times dlna from MMW) things are inconsistent.

Sorry that this is so long.

If you want (and are terribly confused by my ramblings) we can set up a time for you to teamviewer into my system and see what is what. Or I will try to continue my 'Inspector Clouseau' my way through <G>. As always thanks for continuing to work on this with me

Hi, thank you for continuing to debug this.

So it seems that the root of the problems is during install of the service that fails. It is installed by MM, but not completelly, MM fails to set the proper account etc. because the Windows elevation prompt dialog freezes as you indicated. That is strange, did you install MM as portable or as standard version? If you installed it as portable, could you install it as standard and re-try whether it helps?

EDIT:
I don't understand following:
4) The windows message box pops up with 'do you want this program ...'. I try to click YES but the button does not highlight/select. Neither the yes/no button do anything. The system X does nothing. I have to rightclick the second MM icon on task bar to close it.
How you could click task bar? If the User Acces Control dialog appears then everything including task bar is grayed out in the background like this:

Image

Maybe you use a non-default UAC settings?

This is a full install.

Nope ... it does as noted. The UAC settings is set to the next one from the bottom .. don't dim. But this *shouldn't* cause any problems. I can't even remember when/if this has been changed and or why.

Hmm, one way or the other I still cannot replicate. The UAC prompt is system dialog and I don't see a reason why it is not clickable for you. Also by quick searching the internet I have not found similar issues. Does it happen for you in the default UAC level settings too? Is the problem new in build 1672?

Yeah I know, I'm just *special* :) ... #4 Special.

As for the UAC thingy ... as mentioned after the 3-4 times that happened I did another reboot and then it did not happen. I had rebooted just an hour or so earlier. One thing i did mention but might have missed is that the way I closed it was that MM had 2 *process* icons on the task bar. 1icon was MMW and the second one was the UAC message. I right clicked it for the 'close window' option. I don't think i have ever seen (maybe just not noticed) a windows system message including UAC displaying as the app causing it. Normally is a ugly little shield like button. Like it just did when i ran the BACKUP add on. Maybe the difference of calling from program or VB script?

So went through shutting everything down one at a time with restarting MMW in between and trying ... can't work it out.

So I rebooted. Let everything finish loading. Started MMW and tried to install ... samething.

Not this part you might not believe ... I tried to install again but this time i jyst typed in 'fff' for the password (no not my real password :) ). The UAC box came up and the YES worked. Hmmm i thought. I brought up the services window and the service was installed but its status is STOPPED. So i simply clicked start and it started ... really. So i went back in and UNINSTALLED the service. I restarted MMW and tried with the password and the UAC box is frozen again.

The UAC thing is new to 1672. The access denied has been on again/off again for the last several releases and i *think* a combination of things

Hi, alhough I cannot replicate the issue, I most probably see the reasons and fixed them in build 1673 as http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=11533

So please re-try with 1673 once is available, thank you!
