Library files won't play

Hi all,
I've not used MM is a LONG time (many years). Just reconnected my external HD to reconnect/access library. I let it scan which took hours as library is large (2000 albums). Files now appear but won't play. It runs thru each, grays it out moves to next file.
In searching forums I seen possible codec issue mentioned but says this is for EUROPEAN Win 10 versions. I'm U.S. So thinking that's not it.?
The last time I used MM, they did play but in was on Win 8 or prior. Now on win 10.
Files DO play on WMP.
HOWEVER, another odd issue since WIN10 is my external drive not reading music cd's (can't rip). Since I can't see the disk I don't know what file format they are. Neither MM no Win Explorer can read any audio disk (new from local bands). I almost never use the drive so and it's been in a drawer for years so not sure if the issue is the reader or Windows. BUT since MM is unhappy too....makes me wonder if the 2 issues are related.
Thoughts?
