Error message on startup: Runtime error 217
Updated by Pavle Lacarac on Nov 13, 2014

Some users have reported seeing "Runtime error 217 at xxxx" when running MediaMonkey after installing certain applications that make changes to Windows permissions and/or due to virtualization. To fix this issue, re-enable full access for Administrators, SYSTEM, and your USERNAME as follows:

  1. Go to C:\Users\YOUR USERNAME\AppData\Local
  2. Right click on "VirtualStore" folder and select Properties
    Note: you need to enable viewing of "Hidden" and "Protected operating system files" in order to see this folder.
  3. Select the Security tab to see access permissions (you'll have to persist at this due to a number of warning dialogs)
  4. Add full access to each of Administrators, SYSTEM and your USERNAME, click 'Apply' and then continue with the others

Some users also reported this issue on Windows XP SP3 and it is mostly caused by Registry permissions:

  1. Close MediaMonkey and run Regedit
  2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\MediaMonkey
  3. Right click on MediaMonkey
  4. Select Permissions
  5. Press Advanced -> Add
  6. Enter your username
  7. Press OK
  8. Click on Full Access -> Allow
  9. Select "Replace All child object permissions with ..."
  10. Press Apply -> OK
  11. Restart MediaMonkey
