The philosophy behind MediaMonkey is to ensure that the Free version
has all of the functionality that would be required by the average user
(see: http://www.mediamonkey.com/product.htm ), and that satisfied
users or more advanced users will upgrade to the Gold version that adds
more advanced functionality. The one glaring exception to this
philosophy is that MP3 encoding expires after 30 days in the free version.
Unfortunately, to legally distribute MP3 encoding functionality, per-user
fees must be paid to Thomson for each MP3 encoder shipped, and in the
absence of such fees, encoding must be limited to 30 days.
In order to ensure MediaMonkey's long term viability, it was necessary to
comply with these licensing regulations. Fortunately, the free LAME MP3
encoder is available in a variety of locations on the internet, and users can
switch to the standard version of LAME if they wish to avoid upgrading to the
Gold version of MediaMonkey by replacing the included LAME encoder.
