How to Manage a Library Across Multiple Machines & Devices
Solution
MediaMonkey provides several means of managing a library across multiple
machines.
1. You can store music on a server, and manage the collection via machines
connecting to the server, each containing their own database, using the
File Monitor function to keep the local database in synch with the
server content. This is very simply to setup, however, the only
downside is that it should only be used if you are only using metadata
that is saved to track tags (search the online help for 'About Track
Properties' to learn more).
1. Use File | Add/Rescan tracks to the library to add tracks from a network
location
2. Set up the File Monitor to monitor changes to the network location
3. You can store music on a server, and share a database among all the
machines connecting to the server. See:
http://www.mediamonkey.com/support/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=49
4. You can use the Device Synchronization function to synch tracks temporarily
to portable devices. iPods and Plays for sure devices will update the
database with any changes to Play History or Ratings. See the online
help.
5. You can use the Device Synchronization function to temporarily synch
tracks from a server to a machine. Any changes to the tracks on the
machine can be set to trigger synchronization of the track back to the
original server.
1. Map a directory on your local drive to a drive letter. This can be done
by going to the command prompt (Run > CMD) and typing
SUBST S: [C:/Path on drive to map to S:]
2. Set up a new Generic Portable / Audio Device in MediaMonkey
that points to the newly created S: drive, preferably with
bidirectional synchronization, and then Auto-Synchronize tracks to that
new device.
6. If you're using a local database (see item 1 at the top), You can use the
Virtual CD function to temporarily store tracks from the server to the
remote machine, and update track properties as you listen to them.
