1. I think so, but I don't typically use it for CDs. You might want someone else to jump in on that.

2. MediaMonkey.ini file in same location as MM.DB. It contains some program settings.
The single most important thing is the MM.DB .

3. Just follow instructions, especially about "BE CAREFUL NOTE"

If you do a fresh test install of portable now, you can't just copy that one over to a new computer.

My advice, since you just recently started with MM, is to do a test just to play around to see how it works.
Then wait a month or so 'til you get a new system and just start everything new again. In other words: new install, fresh scan of library, fresh settings, etc.

......otherwise you are gonna have to do this http://www.mediamonkey.com/wiki/index.p ... w_computer
- the stuff on "point to a new database"

...and since you've been frustrated and struggling with it all a lot lately, I believe you would save yourself a lot of stress.

so you can run them without having to "install" (a true install) them to your OS and can take them around anywhere and use on most computers.

Many people use them on their desktop as a way of keeping their OS/registry clean, ability to copy it off and run it elsewhere, for less system conflict,
ease in backup manipulation, etc.

You just install latest MM and look for portable mode to check, then install where you want.

The difference when upgrading is you can just download/install latest to system, then delete new ".DB file" and .ini file (if you want)
and insert (recopy) your backedup ones into same location. You can just find the periodically backedup files whenever you need to update.

Be careful to note: insert the new .DB and .ini files "BEFORE" you actually launch a new version. This will allow proper updating of the old .DB structure/problems
from the new version.

In your case now, you would be getting your MM.DB file from your current MM. But in the future, you can use the last monthly backup file if something were to happen.
ok. so........
i'll be fresh-installing MM to a new laptop in a few weeks.

1. do a portable install (but, it not mucking up the registry, can it still be set to "auto-play" and whatnot?)
2. what ".ini" file?
3. back it and mm.db whenever upgrading then put them back afterwards.

that about it?

i'll try a normal fresh install first and see how everything works; if i still have problems, i'll go portable.

seems it'd be just as easy to copy/paste the mm.db file to my monthly backup.
Or, like I previously posted, just install MM as portable to your music folder. Then it will backup with your music without any extra effort.
considered this.
what does a "portable" install mean precisely?

Re: more weirdness

Yes, Nohitter!!! That is "close" to what I do. Portable, then I just manually copy over the whole MM folder to backup and date it.
.....so I can easily backtrack to any endpoint I want in case of an emergency.

That's essentially what I've been talking about all along, Willis
(that's a "Diff'rent Strokes" reference).

where is it?
its a hidden file just search for the mm.db file and tell windows search to look in the hidden files also.

that is what i did for a long time was just back up the mm.db file but i use the karens replicator now and just back up the whole c drive to the usb hard drive i have. makes it even eaiser that way and i know i got them backed up too. plus it is easier to use if i have to change hard drives i just install mm and then copy the backed up folder and folder the mm.db file is in then all is normal again. :D
hmmmmmmmmmmm

so for simplicity's sake, should i just regularly backup whatever folder mm.db is in?

just seems like a lot of work...
since WMP saves my playlists in with my music folder, i can back it all up in one fell swoop.

MM doesn't seem like much of a "replacement". :-?
sorry for the late reply. on this.

but the windows media player also keeps making the full file of the playlists and stores that in the folder. thus adding the size of the playlist to the foler all the time you make a new playlist. this will eat up the room on the hard drive fast.

the same thing is true of mediamonkeys normal static playlists they are stored as the full file in the mm.db file thus making it take up more and more space.
if you really want to make lots of playlists then the thing to do is use the auto playlists which mediamonkey provides because they are just a set of rules that is saved in the mm.db file that every time you click on the playlist in the dirctory tree to hear it that auto list runs and fills in the now playling playlist with your preset rules for what songs you want on that playlist. this allows for much less space to be used on the hard drive and gives you more room for other stuff.

so as i said the mm.db file is easy to back up and only thing you need for the playlists to be backed up. how hard is it to make a windows task scheduler to run a windows backup program which microsoft has provided also. to back up just the mm.db automaticly every week or month or year or decade if that is what you want.?

you can not tell me it is too much work to use mediamonkey. i'm running mediamonkey on the system as a jukebox / radio station fully automated and all i need to do is add in music if i have the room or replace hardware when needed. monkey is doing all the work or windows is doing the work because i also have the computer stop monkey and do computer maintan..... and then reboot the computer then restart mediamonkey and go for the day again. it changes playlists on the hour has an auto deejay program called " DJamp " that uses msagents to do anouncements of the songs. on weekdays. and it is just my entertainment like it was ment to be. oh if i want to i can add in more one liners for the dee jay to say.

so wow lots of work?

oh okay setting it up is work and takes time. but all the scripts are in the forum that i use and typing the task jobs up in the windows task scheduler is timely for the 400 playlists i have it change to and from. or the scripts to start and stop and do maint... but i did all that work yr's ago UMmm since 2003 or earlier. i even use karens replicator to do the backup of the songs and system to the usb drive of mine. yes it runs on timers the same as everything esle.

one little thing for you.

if you like something it is not work it is fun.

:D 8)

with 20 to 23 skins i made for mediamonkey you might say i like it and have fun using it. :)
well, the backup script is still hanging...
