I tried to delete a song from a playlist and the only option was to remove it completely, I didn't think to remove the playlist itself, which seems to have worked.

Thanks again for your help I'm sure I will be back to sort any problems in the future.

You can't drag and drop to an Autoplaylist. There is no need to because if it has the criteria as defined in the Aplaylist it "automatically" appears there.
If you d&d a file that does not fit the criteria, it will not be accepted for obvious reasoning.

An alternate way of converting an Autoplaylist to an ordinary one:

1. Create a new ordinary playlist (in name only) at the tree.
2. Display the Autoplaylist you want to convert.
3. "Select All" files in that Autoplaylist
4. Right-click on them > Send to > look for the name of the
newly created playlist > click it.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by those two points?

- Deleting an Autoplaylist won't mess anything else up. Playlists are not the files themselves. They only reference file paths.
Deleting one only erases the database's reference to that playlist/including its "list" of paths.

-Are the names not under "Playlists" in the tree?

Thanks for the suggestions both of you.

I assume autoplaylists are stuck there then and cant be deleted without ruining the library

Any idea what the names of the autoplaylists are so I can change them back?

There is a difference between Playlists and AutoPlaylists. Tracks cannot be deleted from AutoPlaylists because they are there following the criteria you set up. You can only have tracks removed by changing the criteria. Those pre-set playlists are probably AutoPlaylists. For ordinary playlists, however, this is my experience.

I am using version 4.1.19 1858. If I highlight one or more tracks in an ordinary playlist and then press the delete key on the keyboard, MM gives me three choices:

Remove from Playlist Only
Remove from Playlist and the Library Only
Remove from Playlist, Library and the Computer

I get the same choices if I highlight one or more tracks, right-click and select Remove.

I assume you want only the first choice.

You can change an AutoPlaylist into an ordinary playlist by doing this.

1) Click on the AutoPlayist to display all the tracks in the playlist
2) Select all the tracks (Crtl-A)
3) Right-click in the display and select Copy
4) Edit -> New Playlist and Name it and choose the Type to View As and click OK
5) You will now have a blank list. Right-click in it and select Paste
6) You have now converted an AutoPlaylist into an ordinary Playlist

UPDATE: A reminder than a new playlist will always be created as a sublist to whichever list is highlighted in the media tree. Normally, I would think, you want Playlist or one of the other top level entries to be highlighted and not the name of one of the playlists.

You may get a better answer to this, but I right-click on a song then on the properties, then on the Classification tab and delete the appropriate entry under that tab (i.e. delete the song from a listed playlist).

Playlists (i havent a clue what im doing)

Have finally uncoupled from ITunes and its evil ways but I'm having trouble getting my head round playlists.

There were pre set playlists which I just went in and renamed and thought it would be a case of just deleting what was in there and dragging what I wanted into them. This doesn't seem to be the case, when I 'remove' a song from a playlist it looks like it will delete it from the whole library.

In short how do I remove songs from just the playlist and can I just drag and drop to add to playlists.

Hope this makes sense and someone can assist.
