try to remove those rules totally and see if that makes any difference, other than that I'm out of ideas.

You can see in the background that I have selected 3 m4a files on the ipod playlist while the rest are mp3. All original files on my computer are m4a.

Two of the m4a files were ripped from the original CD in itunes v7.1.1.5 on April 20, 2007. I checked other songs from the same CD and they also seem to sync OK without converting to mp3 files ( in contrast to shayguitarra's findings).

The third m4a file was ripped from the CD in itunes v4.7.1.30 on Jan 6, 2007. Others from the same CD also sync as m4a files as expected. However, a different CD that was ripped within minutes of this one is converted to mp3 during sync.

I can't be 100% sure, but I really don't think that this unwanted convertion to mp3 was happening in previous versions of mediamonkey (ie. six months ago). I do not know when this problem started. I am currently using MM 3.0.6.1190.

Can you post a screenshot of your autoconversion tab?

Re: m4a Conversion problem with 5th gen AND SHUFFLE ipod

I am having the exact same problem with my ipod shuffle (the smaller 2Gen one).

No boxes are ticked in the auto-conversion settings. 90 songs were converted into mp3 (for no apparent reason) and only 2 songs were transferred as unconverted m4a. There doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason to it!

The songs all play fine, but it takes a long time to sync due to the conversion process.

Any ideas?

m4a Conversion problem with 5th gen ipod

I posted on this a few weeks ago, but my post was a bit confused so I deleted it. I hope this is a bit clearer.

Most of my files are in either flac, mp3 or m4a, with a few wmas. When synching I convert the flac and wma files to vbr mp3s. I synch my mp3s as they are. I also want to leave my m4as as they are as the ipod supports them, and I find that no matter what you do sound quality suffers when you convert between the 'lossy' formats.

I have my options set as following for auto conversion: I have FLAC and WMA checked for conversion to VBR mp3. This works without a hitch. In the formats set as compatible with my ipod I have included AAC and M4A (and mp3 obviously).

However when I am synching, MM seems to transfer some m4a files directly to my ipod, but for some reason it converts others to mp3. Sometimes it does this with files from the same album that were ripped at the same time. Does anyone have any idea as to why this is happening? I have a feeling that m4a might be a bit of a weird format, so some files are recognised as m4a while others are not. But I do not have the 'incompatible formats' box ticked in auto-conversion so I don't know where MM is getting the instruction to convert from.

Not sure when this started happening. It was only recently that I happened to be watching the sync process and saw it happen. So it could have been doing this from the beginning.

Any thoughts or input appreciated! :-?
