I posted on this a few weeks ago, but my post was a bit confused so I deleted it. I hope this is a bit clearer.
Most of my files are in either flac, mp3 or m4a, with a few wmas. When synching I convert the flac and wma files to vbr mp3s. I synch my mp3s as they are. I also want to leave my m4as as they are as the ipod supports them, and I find that no matter what you do sound quality suffers when you convert between the 'lossy' formats.
I have my options set as following for auto conversion: I have FLAC and WMA checked for conversion to VBR mp3. This works without a hitch. In the formats set as compatible with my ipod I have included AAC and M4A (and mp3 obviously).
However when I am synching, MM seems to transfer some m4a files directly to my ipod, but for some reason it converts others to mp3. Sometimes it does this with files from the same album that were ripped at the same time. Does anyone have any idea as to why this is happening? I have a feeling that m4a might be a bit of a weird format, so some files are recognised as m4a while others are not. But I do not have the 'incompatible formats' box ticked in auto-conversion so I don't know where MM is getting the instruction to convert from.
Not sure when this started happening. It was only recently that I happened to be watching the sync process and saw it happen. So it could have been doing this from the beginning.
Any thoughts or input appreciated!
