In the first pic, the display is static, Foreigner, but the audio being heard is Kate Bush (3rd in the playing list)

While I switch to MS Word, Kate Bush continues to play

When I switch back to MM5 (second pic, a few seconds later), Foreigner and the subsequent track (which have previously completed playing) have disappeared while Kate Bush is still playing and has moved up to the correct, i.e. top, playing position with the subequent tracks following.

I shall install build 2424, as you advise

I also don't follow as in both screenshots the Player and Playing seem to match.

I've encountered the event again and manged to get screencaps to illustrate it.

I'd left MM5 playing while I had a shower.

When I returned, the screen was blank (screensaver) and Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights was playing but when I released the screensaver, Foreigner - Waiting For A Girl Like You was heading the "Playing" list in a "stalled" condition.

I pressed Print Screen then loaded MS Word to paste the result - when I returned to MM5, Kate Bush - Wuthering Heights was playing at the head of the "Playing" list! I pressed Print Screen then loaded MS Word to paste that result, too.

Since I have been unable to replicate/capture my original experience, I suggest that this query be "rested" and I will "awaken" it only when I have corroborative evidence.

"Branigan" is playing, "Pitney" isn't.

I think the "greyed" filelisting was a result of me placing the cursor over it.

I had set up a playing list and started playing but nothing else. I left MM playing and then, when I returned, I noticed the discrepancy.

Can you confirm if the file in the Filelisting is bolded and playing in your screenshot? The Player shows it's in playing state.

I still haven't managed to grab a shot of exactly what I mean but here's a shot of an anomaly - the playing bar does not reflect what's in the playing queue:
