There is a way in MM5 to go some way towards achieving what you suggest.
The Last Played criteria operators include the options greater or less than n hours or days ago.
You access these via the dropdown arrow as
shown here
so if criteria included something like "Last played was greater than 30 days ago" the playlist would be auto-housekept by removing played tracks.
The issue is that the played tracks would pop back up again in a month, but this may be OK in some situations.
