That article was in my first reply, would have saved a lot of time if you'd read it.

The Backup KB article also links right back to it to tell users where the database is located: http://www.mediamonkey.com/support/inde ... ticleid=65

This is an interesting thread.
@travelmates, thanks for asking the question :)

Hi Lowlander,

NO, i never read that and possibly never would have for i never wanted to modify either db or ini file.
The difference of location between mm v3 and mm v4 makes all the difference and perhaps this should be pointed out in the help file for " backing up "
I am grateful for your help for i would have been stuffed if my system would have crashed.
Also good to know i didn't do anything wrong.
TA AGAIN

Did you read: http://www.mediamonkey.com/support/inde ... ticleid=17 It suggest that MediaMonkey 4 uses Roaming for Windows 7.

Hi lowlander,
Thanks for you patience.
I think i worked out how to post the screenshots if still needed using postimage.org.
However it still leaves the question that the help file for backing up points to local and my db file is in roaming.
I could have been under the impression i had a backup where as i didn't really.
It might look or be pedantic but for a newbie like me it could have been a disaster.
Specially if you are going to have updated some 80k+ of music files.
Have i done something wrong to not have the db in local updated when i loaded w7.

If the date is current than it is the correct DB. As said making changes may not increase size.

Hi again

Sorry i forgot to say that the roaming - date modified is the correct one (you get that so early in the morning)
To verify the local/roaming question i have made snapshots taken with snipping tool but i don't know how to post them.
Perhaps there is an easier way but i am still to new which i realize must be a pain.

Regarding the Portable install i will try that a bit later on for that would come in very handy indeed

The DB is able to use empty space before increasing size. The DB also only stores information about files, not the files themselves. Lastly you may be looking at the wrong DB, but as I said using Date Modified should help you figure that out.

Portable Install is meant to be installed on a USB drive and then you should be able to move it between different PC's while still using the same DB. You can install it anywhere else too, but it may not be what you're looking for. DBNAme can point to the same DB from multiple PC's, however you need to make sure you use Paths to files that are accessible from all PCs (so not a local path, but a network path instead).

Hi Lowlander.

First a thanks to all for your replies but being a newie I don't understand that the db size doesn't increase.
60 x some 70Kb = over 3Mb
Therefore, is there an allocated space when you add a song for artwork etc or is all that data compressed or do i have to add the songs first to the library?
And why is the roaming db so much bigger than the local db?
If I use the portable setup does that mean i can have the same data (db file) on 2 pc's ( and as such a backup)
Questions gallore.

Use DBName in MediaMonkey.ini for custom DB location: http://www.mediamonkey.com/support/inde ... ticleid=46

Easiest way is to do a portable install.

Read http://www.mediamonkey.com/support/inde ... 46&nav=0,2

I would rather like to use a custom location. I would prefer to have these files stored on my Data drive not on the OS C:\ drive.

How do I achieve that please.

Running Win7x64 with MM4.0.1.1461

DB size doesn't increment with each change so it can stay the same size even when changes have been made. You should go on date modified.

correct location of mm.db in help files??

by travelmates » Wed Feb 08, 2012 8:16 pm

Yesterday i did a backup as per suggested locations in the help files for windows 7. ( Vista / Windows 7: C:\users\<User Name>\AppData\Local\MediaMonkey\ )
I updated some 60 music files (mp3) with artwork and composer etc etc.
When i did another backup and compared the files sizes they were still identical in size but the date (renamed the first backup from mediamonkey to mediamonkey 1)
However when i looked at files in the \appdata\roaming\MM directory the sizes of ini and db had grown considerably.
Am i doing something wrong or is there a setup in w7 i need to change or is the help file wrong?
I am using windows 7 pro but i didn't think that would make a difference.
Any hints are appreciated.
