I've been able to convert the file to a 24-bit FLAC using a separate program. The FLAC file plays in MediaMonkey, so this will be a usable workaround for the time being.

After some more testing, the Now Playing queue window seems to be only affected when the Library view is in any view that displays the album art (ex: Show Art With Details). When the Library listing is in the text-only Show Details, all the sorting in the Now Playing queue works.

Looks like Avast put out a fix rather quickly, to force the update right click on the avast icon in the taskbar, choose updating --> AVS Update.
