2 albums with the same name tagging problem

Post by ZeppelinNL »

Hi guys. I don't know if I had to post this in this forum or the device syncing forum, I'm new here so don't get angry.

I have a problem with MediaMonkey concercing the tags of albums. I have several albums with the same name but by 2 different artists (for example: "Live" by both AC/DC and Blind Guardian, "Giant Robot" by both Buckethead and the band Giant Robot etc. etc.). When organizing my MM library its ok, but when syncing to my iPod (Classic, if that matters) it goes wrong. They do show up as 2 different albums when going through coverflow, but when I select one, it also shows the other album's tracks. (for example when I select "Live" by AC/DC in the coverflow, it also shows Blind Guardian's "Live" tracks and vice versa.) And when I select "Albums" in the Music menu only 1 of them shows. How can I properly (re)tag those albums to let them show up right in my iPod.

(I am from the Netherlands, so excuse me if you don't understand my english :D).\

Kindly greetings,

mediamonkey can see them already as they are to be seen, the trouble lays in the ipod.
it is not using the artist name to show the albums, it only uses the album names which is why you get both sets of songs.

so your going to have to do a little give and take, when naming them in monkey. add something to the album name in the tags on monkey to make it seem like two different albums when the ipod checkes them.

try something like a name as? Live!!!!!!! on one of them and see if that will fix the ipod's confusion.? :-?

your welcome but only adding a few of ! those to a name is not really changing it to what we read. but the computers will see more digits to the name so it would look like a different name to the computer.

how ever if the computer has a code to ignore the extra digits that look the same then multiple !!!! wont work either?

last resort

Sue the artist's for naming the albums the same name.

Hi Guys

Just to add my twopenny's worth here.

What rovingcowboy said is not quite right. Mediamonkey might well see two albums and display them as such in the list view but it still counts them as one album. So, for example, something that I've just spent several days trying to correct and nearly being driven crazy in the process......I have two databases just now, Mediamonkey and Helium, MM was reporting 1155 albums in the database and Helium had 1156. A side by side comparison revealed nothing so I dumped the report to Excel and did a very painstaking comparison there still I found no differences so I listed the MM report by album title and I found Bruce Springsteen and Rainbow both have an album called Rising. Changing the titles to Rising(BS) and Rising(R) (not strictly necessary I know but.....) and now MM reports 1156 albums so even though it displays two albums, like the iPod, it still handles them as one. Helium handles them correctly because it treats the Artists differently as well as the albums.

I know this happens because this isn't the only time I have had a duplicate name, for example Free and Ryan Adams 'Heartbreaker' and The Jeff Beck Group and Robben Ford 'Truth' - I have those tagged as Heartbreaker(F) and Heartbreaker(RA) and Truth(JB) Truth(RF) and so on....

So, the question is, in a collection that's pretty large, 1156 and still growing as I haven't finished adding my CD's as yet, maybe another 300-400 to go, there is a potential for a lot of this sort of duplication. Is there a way that MM can handle this correctly without having to be vigilant each time.

Best Regards

Goodog
