Not syncing playlists

Post by WimYogya » Sat Jun 16, 2012 12:09 pm

Since I migrated from iTunes to MM i have disliked the MM-syncing procedures. Too complicated, no clear overview, lots of confusing settings.
Since today I dislike it even more.
I just want to sync a number of playlists I created within MM. After 3 hours of 'syncing' none of the playlists had copied any track to the iPod.
Instead I found an unknown folder on the iPod: iPod_Control with subfolders: All - Artwork - Music - Tones. Music has many subfolders: All - F00 - F01 - F02 etc.... and all of those have again subfolders ALL.
They contain tracks that were NOT AT ALL in the playlists I wanted to sync, for example videos/vodcasts that I excluded from my playlists.

It is very confusing and unpleasant.
I retried 2 times, with the same result.
Cannot find any way to do the normal syncing (as I managed to do before, inspite of the unfriendly menus)
What to do?
Thanks!

It works fine for me. Just select the Playlists to be synced and make sure everything else is deselected in the Auto-Sync List tab of the Device Profile and then sync. Make sure you have 4.0.5.1496 or newer. Then use Auto-Sync to sync to the device.

Will try it again - if I can afford again to let it run for 12-14 hours to delete all old content and fill it (again) with my playlists.
As far as I know I did exactly the same as what you described - and I have the newest (debug) version.
Before I COULD sync the playlists (although terribily time consuming) but apparently last time NOT anymore - after several attempts.
The result looks like MM selected tracks randomly (around 20.000 tracks for my 120 Gb iPod) from my total collection of 100.000 tracks.
As said: no playlist at all was copied. Which also means: all the 'full classical works' that I wanted to copy (symphony with 4 parts, opera with 32 parts etc) was not copied. Complete random selection results in an opera with track 2-9-31 or a symphony with track 2-4.
Any idea where this folder iPod_Control comes from?
It is NOT a folder at all anywhere in my collection...

The iPod Control and stuff is the way Apple organizes things on iDevices. Make sure that you're editing the correct Portable Device and verify only Playlists are selected in the Auto-Sync List tab.

Also as you're trouble shooting you may want to start with syncing a single small Playlist so you don't have to wait so long to sync. Also if it fails on 4.0.5.1496 you may want to try 4.0.6.1498: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... 02#p341102

Playlists now syncing, but new trouble...

Post by WimYogya » Tue Jun 19, 2012 9:56 am

Hi Lowlander,
With the newest build and syncing step by step things went ok. Still no clue why it failed before, since essentially I did the same as many times before - and the same as what I did after your newest remarks. Strange.
Even stranger, a new problem...

After I had synced all playlists, I still had around 5Gb empty on my iPod. I wanted to increase the amount of tracks on a few playlists, to use this free space. Apparently I was too optimistic, because I got the message:
'Not enough space. OK to delete files?'
I answered YES, assuming that only a small number of tracks would be deleted, just enough to make the new additional tracks fit. But this was NOT the case at all. This is the result:
1. MM deleted about 15.000 (!) of my previously patiently added 17.550 tracks, to be able to add 503 tracks!
2. The result is that after all my work I had 3000 tracks, in stead of the 18.000 I had assumed.
3. Many playlists were now almost completely empty: had 3 tracks in stead of 500, 7 in stead of 1000.
4. The playlists I had expanded to fill the free space, were now present 2x: 1x almost empty, 1x with the requested amount of files.

Something again seems wrong, right?
But what?

Auto-Sync only recognizes files synced with Auto-Sync to the device. Thus if files were added with manual sync or other programs they will be offered to be removed even if they're set to be synced. This is because only Auto-Sync tracks what is being synced.

Also if you have used beta version of MediaMonkey 4.0.5 at any point you may want to:
1) Remove all files from device using MediaMonkey
2) Sync single track using iTunes to device
3) Run normal Auto-Sync in MediaMonkey

This fixes most syncing irregularities. I've had to do this a few times during the beta process and now syncing works flawlessly for me. One big difference for me though is that I rarely sync the same music files on Playlists to the device, but video files that have been previously synced are not removed and resynced here. Music Playlists always have the exact amount expected on device.

Don't understand what you mean to say with the first paragraph but most likely it is irrelevant for my problem because I did not add anything manually: I changed the properties of a few playlists (increased the amount of tracks), then auto-synced THOSE playlists AGAIN, assuming that overall there was enough space to do that. So then I still do not understand why MM deletes 15.000 tracks if I only want to replace playlists with a total of about 1000 tracks, 500 of them already being synced + 500 new ones.
My almost permanent experience with MM is that for every solution the developers (or willing helpers like you) offer, there is a new problem ahead... The program seems to have too many loose ends, causing too much trouble.

As to the 'cleaning' process you described, I do not understand it, especially step 2. What am I supposed to do there? And how? Add around 18-20.000 tracks manually to the iPod? Or? I also don't know at all if I ever used the version you mentioned.

In step 2 you sync 1 track to the device using iTunes. I normally drag a file from Windows Explorer onto the device in iTunes to sync it as I don't maintain an iTunes library.

Oh, ok, but what is the use of doing that?

To allow MediaMonkey to AutoSync again. I guess it may fix the devices DB.

Well, I don't think I need to take those steps.
I did a lot of finetuning, made some changes to my own playlists and now think all works fine.
My major change is not to sync all 18.000+ in one go, but in 4 or 5 different groups.
Thanks.
