Play List Order on Android Device

Post by IanRTaylorUK » Sat May 02, 2020 6:03 am

For multi-disc albums like Pink Floyd's "The Wall" and Fleetwood Mac's "Tusk" I would like the Playlist on the Android devices to display sorted first by disc and then by track so the tracks play in the intended order.

I have both track and disc added on the Windows desktop. The files are transferred with the correct prefix of disc then track - filename e.g. 101 - In The Flesh (Part 1).mp3 to 213 - Outside the wall.mp3.

But when the playlist is displayed in the MMA, the order does not seem to be sorted by disc.

I there a way I can get a better sort order.

Thanks.

MM4W 4.1.29.1910 on Windows 10 v2004 Build 19041.423
Music library of 30,000+ files backed up to OneDrive
MMA 1.3.8.0916 on Sony Xperia XZ with Android 8 & ~11,000 Tracks
MMA 1.3.8.0916 on Samsung Tab S5e with Android 9 & ~11,000 Tracks
Android Devices synchronised with MM4W using USB
Trying MM5W 5.0.0.2262 on same Windows 10 sharing same media files (but separate library!)

Are you viewing by Album when doing this or in Folders? Which version of MMA? How were the files synced to your device?

Checking here it sorts as expected.

Thanks for reply.

Typically I was viewing ALL music in MMW (4.1.28.1905) and making a selection then Right Click / Send To / Playlist / New Playlist. Sometimes it was sorted by filename and sometime date added - therein lies my problem I think!

I now realise that the playlist was created in the order displayed. So if I had not sorted by Disc / Track then I did not get the order I was expecting. I suppose I was thinking the disc / track would be used to sort but when I think that many Playlist will be multi-album, it makes sense to follow the displayed order.

Normally this is not really an issue, but some albums it is useful to have the right order. So I will just sort by disc / album when it is important. Consider - for example - Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds!

To correct my "mistake", it looks like I have to delete the MMW Playlist and recreate it in the right sort order. It might be useful to have some functionality in MMW to resort a playlist to overcome this user error! Alternatively something in MMA (I use 1.3.8.0916) to change a playlists sort order would be good.

My files were sync'd to the device using MMW and USB. I have a Portable Device Sync for the SD Card on both my phone and tablet. I typically just use my playlists as a basis for synching then both devices end up with the same files / art work.

I now have a better understanding of how playlists work - many thanks.
