Migrating a library to a new drive.

Post by Brian Siano »

I keep my library on a 2-gig drive designated I:. I want to replace that drive with a new 4-gig drive, which is in a swappable bay designated G. I'd like to migrate the library, and then put the 4-gig G: inside the box.

I could use the Organize Library feature to copy the files to the new drive. Which would take a while, and there's issues about long file names and the like. But I'm wondering about simply copying the directories to the new drive G:, moving the drive inside, and then assigning it the old drive's letter I:. If I did that, would Media Monkey simply use the new drive I: as it did the old one, and find the files and access the library normally?

I'd recommend Auto-Organize Files: https://www.mediamonkey.com/wiki/WebHel ... nize_Files

Long filenames are not an issue in MediaMonkey 5/Windows 10, but Auto-Organize Files can limit the filenames (For example $Left<Artist>,50) limits the Artist to a maximum of 50 characters in the filename): https://www.mediamonkey.com/wiki/WebHel ... ormats/5.0

You can however move outside of MediaMonkey to the same folder structure and then manually re-assign drive: https://www.mediamonkey.com/wiki/WebHel ... sign_Drive

Thanks. I didn't know about that limiting-field-length feature, and I'll definitely use it. (Classical music sometimes assigns very long Artist names, including conductor, soloists, orchestra names.)

It sounds as though I can simply copy the files to the new drive G:, and then use that Media Properties thing to point to the new drive G:. (Nice thing about this method is that I'd have a backup of my library, and I can probably switch back to the original if something went wrong.)

Just completed the job. Absolutely no problems., I copied the files to the new drive, installed the new drive inside the machine, removed the old drive, and pointed MediaMonkey to the new drive. No problems at all. Thanks!
