Jamendo and Magnatune integration

Jamendo and Magnatune integration
The one feature I'd most like to see in MediaMonkey is one that is currently unavailable in any Windows media player: library integration of Magnatune and Jamendo. Both have open libraries that allow 3rd party apps to access their streams, but very few players make use of this. Probably the most notable is the Linux player Rhythmbox, which has a nearly ideal implementation of them. Integrating them means that users would always have a vast library of music at their fingertips, even if they didn't have a large local library.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Can you provide some links for investigation?

Re: Jamendo and Magnatune integration
Well, Jamendo is at http://www.jamendo.com/en/ and Magnatune is at http://www.magnatune.com/. However, the best example is the Rhythmbox player (http://projects.gnome.org/rhythmbox/) which is the default media player on the Gnome desktop interface for Linux. The "easiest" way to see it in action would be to go download a Linux live CD (like from Ubuntu at http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download) and run it long enough to see how its media player works.
Don't get me wrong, incidentally... I think MediaMonkey is a superior player to Rhythmbox in every way except this one. And in that sense it's superior to all the players on Windows since, as far as I can tell, none of them integrate Magnatune and Jamendo like that. So implementing that same functionality would simultaneously give some more love to independent artists who aren't signed to major labels and bring a new selling point to MediaMonkey that no other Windows player has.

For those of us who don't have the time to install linux right now, any chance of a few screenshots pointing out key features that you love?

Re: Jamendo and Magnatune integration
Well, if you download the LiveCD, you don't have to install it. It just runs off the CD, and when you reboot, nothing on your system has changed. Otherwise, if you go out to the Rhythmbox site, they have a section of screenshots (http://projects.gnome.org/rhythmbox/screenshots.html) although there's not much to see because the Magnatune\Jamendo stuff is just integrated into the menus. When you click on Jamendo on the left, you see a library that looks exactly like your library, except it's full of all the Jamendo artists, and ditto for Magnatune. A screenshot of this would be indistinguishable from any other shot of a music library.
So just imagine MediaMonkey doing the same thing - you click either Jamendo or Magnatune on the left, it populates a library with all of their artists, and clicking on one starts a music stream, much like Streamcast. (Jamendo's music, being free and CC-licensed, can also be downloaded at will, which is a slightly higher-level functionality that would probably be a little harder to implement, although Rhythmbox does that as well.)

Re: Jamendo and Magnatune integration
I've put it on my list to investigate this further (as a script), but I warn you my list is a long one! It's unlikely to be something that because native behaviour though, unfortunately.

Is there still any interest in this?

Trimoto
From what I understand this would add a library of downloadable tunes to MM accessed for $15.00 a month. I'm not sure sampling would be possible before purchase See the tag below. I can not say I'd be interested without knowing the quality of the downloads and the available artists.
We select the most amazing independent musicians and offer you unlimited downloading and listening for only $15/month. Downloads are super high quality MP3s and perfect WAV files. Musicians get paid 50%, split evenly from what you listen and download.

Trimoto: I'd be very much interested in a Magnatune integration. They offer a great service allowing you to stream all their music for free. So even if you haven't signed up for a paid membership, you can listen to all the music they offer.
Once you pay, the short ads are gone and you can download all the albums you like in different formats (including lossless FLAC or wav).
(Disclaimer: I'm just a Magnatune user and don't work for them)
I'm currently looking for a new media player that provides Magnatune support. I'm looking at Amarok which offers it, but since I'm on Windows I'm not sure I like the KDE etc. stuff that I need for it to run.
Here are some screenshots on how Magnatune is integrated into Amarok:
- after selecting Magntune you get the different genres they offer on the left:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/283274/sc3/2011 ... 500207.jpg
- you can navigate the tree and for each artist, they list the albums and tracks:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/283274/sc3/2011 ... 700208.jpg
- the search at the top allows to filter the Magnatune collection down:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/283274/sc3/2011 ... 900209.jpg
you can also change the listing to show all the track results grouped by artist
Tracks from Magnatune are just handled like files from your local library and you can add them to playlists as with any other file.
Thanks for considering adding this to MediaMonkey.
Sebastian
EDIT: I only played with Amarak for about 1.5h so far so there's likely more to the Magnatune integration than I discovered.
