Wish and Bug Tracking

Post by MoDementia »

OMG I finally finished the list (sort of)

This post is an extension of my other post What is planned for MM v3.0.4?
It lists all the wishes and bugs I am monitoring for responses. i.e. They effect my MM enjoyment or lack there of!

As you can see the list is quite extensive; keeping track of them all is very time consuming.
As most of them have no Dev Team Responses, with each MM release (beta included) I check to see if any have been granted or fixed.

It should not be the responsibility of users to maintian this sort of tracking mechanism!

Apart from bumping the threads every few weeks until a response from the Dev Team is achieved most of them (not just mine) fall off the boards never to be seen again. (Earliest is Tue Jun 06, 2006 3:18 am)
I have refrained from bumping these posts so far but...

I know that programmers like to program; not maintain "to do lists"
However, the solution is quite simple; see the other thread. If there is no improvement in this area I may have to resort to drastic measures to get some sort of recognition for these outstanding wishes/bugs.

Dev Team Response:
Description:
There is no reason to update all the tracks on an album when only the Album Comment is changed
I haven't tested Artist Comment yet but I presume it has the same code logic; which would be a bigger waste of updating all the artist tracks when only the Artist Comment is changed.

MM should be able to point to a "Sync-Cache"-directory (beneath the original library), where the same tracks are stored, already converted to the format of the portable device, so you won't need to convert them over and over again on-the-fly, when syncing. Post: Remember Tree Expanded setting for back to previous view and Back Button
Dev Team Response:
Description:
Whilst in a files to edit node or a playlist etc it is often required to
1. search for more artist/album
2. create a search on title etc
Using the back button will only return you to the top of the original node not the track you had currently selected.
In addition the search for more artist/album doesn't maintain the selection.
If there are similar albums/titles may need to go back and double check the entry you searched from.
Returning from a find more artist/album doesn't collapse the tree either (return it to a previous state) requiring a manual collapse to maintain node view.

Post: (Auto-tag from Amazon) Sort feature; title; multiple sites
Dev Team Response:
Description:
1) Sort feature - No matter how specific the search criteria, there are always 'garbage results". A simple sort would help. An advanced sort ("Sort by Artist", "Sort by Album", and/or "Sort by Year") would be even better.
2) Title / Album - Don't know if this is possible with Amazon... but I want to be able to look up just an album or just a song title. (If you ever supported an "autotag from AMG [allmusicguide]", it's fairly easy to sort by artist, album, label, year, and even genre.)
(Currently, it appears that Artist is a required field -- you can search for "Artist - Album", but that's about it. Suppose, I want to search for a song "867-5309" --- the current search will try to search artists for some form of "867-5309". Result: maximum garbage, minimal effectiveness.)
3) Multiple sites - Why not provide options to search more than one site simultaneously? Sure, the search will be slower, and there will be more results to sift through, but the results will be more complete.
4) Fields/Columns - Apparently Autotag can pull all sorts of information from Amazon. Some of these fields (for example: LABEL) are not available for show/hide via the grid's context menu. Every field that can be imported/autotagged should be available in the grid. (It would be understandable if you want to exclude COVER and/or COMMENTS from the context menu.)

A couple of you posted before I could add the message header quoted below

It is not an initiative, it is a cry for help.

I am really getting frustrated with monitoring them all with no indication from the development team as to whether they have been dismissed or are even on a list somewhere.

Before another round of Beta testing begins for 3.0.4 I REALLY need to see some responses to these issues (as would many other MM users on theirs I presume)

A simple tracking system maintained by the development team shouldn't be too much to ask for?

Please feel free to add your own lists to the thread (in the same format hopefully) so that the development team can see the scope across MM users and perhaps use it to kick start a tracking system.

@prinzip I posted an example from sqliteman (exactly the same as RITLabs Issues and Bugs Tracking System) in the original thread
OMG I finally finished the list (sort of)

This post is an extension of my other post What is planned for MM v3.0.4?

It's been stated that the developers have a bug tracking system they use themselves. It was also said there was plans to open this up to users, though much like the Extensions database with automatic updating, we've yet to see this happen.

Yep. A read only search / browse interface to the bug tracking database would be handy. Especially when an item shows on the change log and the title is unclear about what has really changed. At this time you can only see items you have initiated.

Re: Wish and Bug Tracking

Post by rusty »

Hi,

Until now we've tracked feature sets and bugs slated for development in a particular release within Mantis, our bug tracking system. We've intentionally kept it separate from the forums because as much cruft as exists in Mantis, there's even more in the forums and my feeling is that completely opening up mantis (i.e. read/write for feature reports and bug reports) would yield a db that is very difficult to work with. But maybe I'm wrong and we should open the db completely.

OR, maybe we should make the DB read-only, and add some mechanism in the forum to track the status of any report (e.g. using the new post topic icons [unconfirmed bug, feedback required, confirmed bug, fixed bug, informational-no fix needed] along with a reference to the bug# in Mantis).

On a related topic, speaking on a personal level, the 3.0.3 release was very intense, and I've needed a bit of downtime to recover. So hopefully, as the rest of the team gets back up to speed we'll be able to give you better information on how we're using your feedback to plan the next release.

Comments welcome...

Hi Rusty,

Thank you for the reply.

I think you maybe right that opening up the database to public write access would make it very messy to work with.
Many of the feature/bug posts in the forum are resolved by the community. i.e. a missed option/menu or a knowledge base article etc.

Here is my suggestion for better feedback communication

Create a sticky post with the first entry containing a link to a/the read only version of the database.
If it's not the real (read only) database then an exported copy of the database once a week should be fine.
This sticky could be used to notify the Dev team of newly created discussion posts, or other important notes (found a reproducable sequence) that users believe need to be added to the database.
Once they are in the database these posts can be acknowledged or just deleted. Some moderators should be given access so that discussion only posts can be moved to the discussion thread.

Some questions:
I pressume the number in front of your What's new? release notes are the actual Mantis tracking numbers?
Then new discussion threads should be in this format and old ones can be updated.
A distinguishing forum icon, links back to the database would be nice but not required immediately.
4641 Fixed Tracklist shifts from the correct position on scrollbar release
Do carry over entries get a new number? What about older/larger issues not part of the current release?
...in a particular release...
Are links to the relevant forum posts added to the database as part of the summary, description or additional information areas (or at a minimum the first note?
The summary would be the most convenient so users could jump straight to the discussion thread in the forum from just the summary view of the read only database.

This would provide status information for users and quick access to discussion threads for the development team and users.

Weekly Feature sets and bug tracking listing

This is a read only listing of feature sets and bugs the development team are aware of and or are working on.
It is updated every Monday.
Forum discussion threads are linked within the summary section of each item. Please post all comments in the relevant threads.
If a discusson thread is not linked for a particular item; create one in the format "<Tracking Number> <Summary>" e.g. "4641 Tracklist shifts from the correct position on scrollbar release" and post the link here so that the tracking database can be updated.

Rusty:

My own feeling is that opening up Mantis as read-only would help the active beta testers.

I took a quick look at the Mantis info and it appears that enabling anonymous access with viewer only rights would accomplish this.

As a user who was involved in the 3.0.3 beta process I can see where you felt a bit burned out. Adding in the site rework and the pending extensions database. Whoa.

Bug tracking

There is still a bug in the tagging of WMA.
Well the info just does not get written to the WMA music file.
Most of my music is in WMA i got a few MP3 files and no problem there.
Now i have to fall back to MP3tag a wonderful program but i rather use MM.
I have XP sp2 running MM V3.1.1.build 1261

1 wish a faster startup would be nice.

I hope the bug can be sorted out quick and i wish you all a nice day.
