Thanks- of several things I tried, this is the one that worked for me. I hope the software engineers are working on this, it is obviously a widespread problem. In case it is of use to them, here is my setup:
Windows Vista Business SP-2 64 bit
Intel Core2 Quad CPU 2.33 GHz
8 GB memory

I ran into a problem where the CD is in the drive, MM locks up my machine completely. The only thing I can do it turn it off and restart. Ctl-Alt Delete won't work.
I'm running a Dell E6500 Laptop.
It's interesting that Windows Media Player doesn't have a problem and can rip from the same CD/DVD player.
I just renamed the IPhone and will try that.
