Encode and Decode, Lame MP3 back to WAV

Post by savana »

If I convert a Lame mp3 file back to a WAV file. Is it bit accurate to the original WAV file it originally came from ?

Bit accurate?

If you convert from a lossy format to any other fomat you'll loose in quality. So i guess the answer to your question is no.

Thanks, I understand that any MP3 format is lossy, but why could'nt the program that compressed the audio reconstruct it to its original state as well.

Because in the process of compressing it, some data is 'lost' hence the 'lossy' term. Our ears can only 'hear' so much, which is what the encoding algorythms try to figure out which bits to keep and which to discard.

The best any de/re-coder could so is an approximation of the orginal.

If you want exact bit for bit you need to use only 'lossless' formats.

What's gone is gone, you can't expect your barber to reconstruct your hair "hair accurate" when cut, he can only guess what your haircut was like :)
