Crash when streaming to Marantz AV8801 pre-pro

Post by InvaderZim »

I use MediaMonkey Gold 4.1.2.1706 on Windows 7 and would like to use MediaMonkey to play music to my new Marantz AV8801 pre/pro from Windows. I am currently able to use iTunes on Windows with AirPlay to control the pre/pro, but that won't send FLAC files and I don't really want to switch everything over to ALAC. Besides, I prefer MediaMonkey. 8)

In MediaMonkey, when I go to Tools->Options, Player and pull down the "Choose Player" dropdown, I see "MediaMonkey Player", "WinAmp 2 or 5", and "UPNP/DLNA Renderer". When I select the last option, I get another dropdown with "marantz AV8801", "WDTVLive", and "Media Monkey Player". So far so good -- it sees the pre-pro.

Unfortunately, as soon as select "marantz AV8801" and press the OK button, MediaMonkey crashes -- it immediately just closes without any kind of warning.

I checked the Event Viewer and nothing is logged regarding the crash.

I've used this MediaMonkey installation with a Roku Soundbridge M2000 and that worked ok, so I think everything is set up properly. I see the Marantz AV7005 is listed under "tested", but I don't know if that helps with the AV8801.

Suggestions would be most welcome -- if I can get this to work, I'll be in hog heaven!

There are several reports of problems with Marantz. I suggest the same as always and that's to capture this in a debug log (step 4b) and send the log to support: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... ?f=20&t=69

Hi,
Please open support ticket and supply us with debug log (http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... ?f=20&t=69) so that we can check them.

Quick update: I found debugging instructions in another post (overlapped with the two responses--thanks), and installed the 4.1.2.1706 debugging version. I repeated the process and got a crash, which I submitted along with the URL of this forum message.

I then restarted MediaMonkey and got an immediate crash -- this time, it said "divide by 0 error". MediaMonkey stayed up until I submitted the second bug report (again, along with a link to this forum message).

I restarted Media Monkey again and got the same result. Instead of submitting the bug report, I checked the Tools->Options->Player and saw that it was set to DLNA and my Marantz AV8801 prepro was selected. So I change that back to "Media Monkey Player" (no DLNA), pressed OK, closed the bug report window (which closed MM). I then restarted MM without a crash.

I did use DbgView to collect a log file. I don't want to post the log because it contains machine and user names, but I'll submit the DebugView log (which doesn't contain anything really interesting as far as I can tell) via the helpdesk.

Thanks!

Thanks! I stupidly replied to the "NO REPLY" email last night with the info you asked for, and saw the bounce message this morning. So now I replied to the ticket and attached the files.

As I said in that reply, I did get it working once -- the pre-pro automatically powered on and played a FLAC file when I ignored the crash message (which appears to be on a different thread than the rest of MM) and just kept using MediaMonkey. But that just worked just one time; when I turned off the pre-pro and restarted MM, I couldn't get it to work again. Still, that's promising.

Hope you do not mind to double post here non private information so that others can learn from your hard work and help to debug and solve thi.

As replied, thank you for the logs and this problem looks like that windows is crashing MMW due the fact that Marantz AV8801 Didn't get Microsoft certification.

Can you please Try this solution http://www.mediamonkey.com/support/inde ... windows-81 and also confirm that WMP can use Marantz as Play to device.

FYI I missed to tell you that Marantz AV7005 had same issue and after the registry patch all worked OK

Can you confirm?

Howdy!

I don't mind sharing this info at all -- hope it helps someone else.

I just updated the ticket to report that, as of three days ago, my Windows 7 machine is now working nearly perfectly with the Marantz AV8801. I'm still running the latest 4.1.3.1708 debug build.

To recap: this is a fully patched Windows 7 running on an iMac in my media room. (The Windows 8.1 machine is my main machine in my office -- both have full MM 4 licenses.) I first tried MM -> Marantz AV8801 on my Win 8.1 office machine and got the crash (divide by zero error in the debug build). I later tried the debug build repeatedly on my Windows 7 machine with the same results. I applied the "PlayTo" patch on both machines (despite the fact that it is only for Windows 8 -- I figured it was harmless to try it on Windows 7) and rebooted. That had no effect -- MM still crashed when I selected the Marantz as the target device and pressed [ENTER]. When I restarted MM, that setting stuck and it would crash again -- but in the debug build, the "divide by 0" message box was not modal, so MM continued to run.

On Tuesday, I tried the Windows 7 machine again without making any changes, and lo and behold -- no crash at startup, and it turned on the Marantz and played perfectly! I have no idea what changed -- it's possible there was *another* reboot, or the Marantz might have been in a different state than before. But since then, I stopped and restarted MM multiple times, and it still plays.

The only glitch I've seen on Windows 7 is that sometimes MM will stop playing after 4 or 5 songs in the playlist, always between songs. I have to press Play to get it to resume. I haven't figured out a pattern there yet.

I will try Windows 8.1 again this weekend. That machine is in my home office, far from the Marantz so I need someone in the house to watch it for me. I'll reboot the Windows 8.1 system one more time and see if the patch makes a difference, and I'll also try Windows Media Player "play to" as you asked.

Thanks again for a fantastic product. My wife is thrilled because now she can quickly choose music to play on our AV system without laboriously scrolling through a list of alphabetized titles and we're rediscovering music we haven't played for 15 year ("Twin Peaks" soundtrack, anyone?). MM+Marantz AV8801 also plays FLAC 96khz/24 just fine, so I'm on the hunt for more HD music tracks!
