I now have two MMs on my PC how do I move files?

Post by Peter Charlton »

I have the lifetime version and updated to MMW5 a couple of days ago. I thought it would simply update my previous version, but I now have two Media Monkey programmes on my Windows PC.
The new version does not have any files in its library.

How do I move all the content from my old version to the new please?
And preferably in a way that doesn't need disc space as I do not have enough room for all my music to be duplicated.

Thank you.

Is this MediaMonkey 4 and MediaMonkey 5? Then it's expected, however you should've seen a prompt to import the MediaMonkey 4 database.

You can copy the MediaMonkey 4 database to the MediaMonkey 5 database location and delete mm5.db in that location. That should import your old Library. MediaMonkey 4 can be uninstalled if you no longer wish to use it.

To put your mind at rest - a bit - Mediamonkey is merely an Index of all your music files, it does not contain or store copies of the tracks.

Thus you can have two versions of MM on your PC both referencing the same set of tracks. You might want to do this until you are fully comfortable with the new version.

If you just downloaded version MM5.xx, you should know that Version 2024 is about to be released. Contains quite a few improvements, and your lifetime licence covers it. Pre-release copies are available here https://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewt ... 95#p521495

As to the coppying over of your database, I would offer one additional suggestion, especially if it contains numerous playlists and tags that might be hard to re-create. Before doing anything else, make a backup copy or two of your existing (MM4 = %APPDATA%\MediaMonkey\MM.DB) database just in case.
Using V2024 LATEST alpha or beta build on Windows 11, HP laptop, managing 13k tracks
