It works for me. Please capture this in a debug log (step 4b) and attach the log to a Support Ticket:

This will help a developer analyze why this happens on your setup.

When I remove (now playing only) the currently playing track from now playing, it does not affect the player, and the track keeps on playing.
Should it not stop playing and move to the next track?

No, that's expected behavior. If you want to stop playback you can use Stop or if you want to move to next you can use Play Next.
