I use the above to keep a current backup of my music files.
I use the "contribute" function which only writes one way, files that have been changed in any way, e.g. new files added or deleted or files that have had tags changed etc.

It works well for me, but leaves my 120Gb USB external backup HDD totally fragmented everytime it runs.
I defrag it but next run it will be fragmented again.
The drive is only for music files of which I have 61Gb

Does anyone have an explanation for this?

Thanks

A guess,

Any change triggers the deletion of the file on the external drive and a new copy is placed at the least recently used locations on the drive. Music files are large and the chances are slim of finding a continuous string of unused sectors all marked with the same 'least used' date.

Personally, I wouldn't be too concerned about fragmentation on the drive, it's just backup storage. Running the defragger often might be a bigger risk to the data. (Premature failure of drive, etc.) Also some defrag programs are better than others, but I'm not sure how they handle the unused portions of the drive.
