I'm running 3.2 and does the volume leveling not work with m4a files? I get an error 1.

You should use volume analysis for m4a files (not leveling).

So Analysis actually will change the volume level of the m4a? Seems like not a very good word for it and I didn't see this explained anywhere in the documentation. I just experimented and by switching the setting from 96db to 86db and then back, while also performing volume analysis each time then playing the track. The analysis, as I would suspect, doesn't change the m4a volume. All it does is display how much it needs to be adjusted. It ofcourse works for playback within media monkey. I want all my tracks whether mp3 or m4a to be leveled when I play them from a CD full of files (not an audio CD) or from my iPod. It appears there is nothing that will do this for m4a? I know iTunes has a volume leveling setting within the tag. MediaMonkey should just use the same tag in the m4a that itunes uses. But I don't use iTunes to manage my library.

No, it will just save the volume offset in the tags as you describe yourself. MediaMonkey's Track Volume is compatible with the iPod when syncing the iPod with MediaMonkey.

I want the change permanent though for when I write the mp3 and m4a files to CD or DVD disc. This does the trick:
