{"id":688,"date":"2020-10-20T12:18:33","date_gmt":"2020-10-20T16:18:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mediamonkey.com\/support\/?post_type=knowledgebase&#038;p=688"},"modified":"2025-03-11T11:54:24","modified_gmt":"2025-03-11T15:54:24","slug":"copy-backup-files-from-an-apple-device","status":"publish","type":"knowledgebase","link":"https:\/\/www.mediamonkey.com\/support\/knowledge-base\/mediamonkey-sync-iphone-ipod\/copy-backup-files-from-an-apple-device\/","title":{"rendered":"Copy Files from an Apple Device to Your PC"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>MediaMonkey for Windows is normally used to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamonkey.com\/wiki\/WebHelp:Exporting_Tracks\">Sync<\/a> content to iPhones, iPads, and iPods, but it can also be used to backup\/copy files from these devices to a PC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To copy selected files:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When the iPod\/iPhone\/iPad is plugged into the PC, MediaMonkey will recognize the device and it will appear in the MediaMonkey Media Tree <em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamonkey.com\/wiki\/WebHelp:iPod_Synchronization\">iTunes is required<\/a> to be installed for Apple iOS based devices, which is all iPhones, all iPads and some iPods)<\/em>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>From within MediaMonkey, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamonkey.com\/wiki\/WebHelp:My_Computer#Devices_&amp;_Services\">browse the files on the device<\/a> by Artist, Album, etc. Select whichever files you want to copy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click&nbsp;<strong>Tools &gt; Edit tags &gt; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamonkey.com\/wiki\/WebHelp:Synchronizing_Your_Tags#Update_Tags\">Update tags<\/a><\/strong> <em>(Tools&nbsp;&gt;&nbsp;Advanced Tag Management&nbsp;&gt;&nbsp;Synchronize Tags on MediaMonkey 4 and older)<\/em>, so that tags of the selected files are updated to match the device&#8217;s database.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Copy the files using any of the methods below:\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you want to add the files to the Library,&nbsp;<em>Copy<\/em>&nbsp;and then&nbsp;<em>Paste<\/em>&nbsp;the selected files into a folder in a Collections&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamonkey.com\/wiki\/WebHelp:Library#Locationhttps:\/\/www.mediamonkey.com\/wiki\/WebHelp:Library#Location\">Location<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;sub-node.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you want to add the files to a drive or device, without adding them to the Library,&nbsp;<em>Copy<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>Paste<\/em>&nbsp;the selected tracks into a folder in MediaMonkey&#8217;s&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamonkey.com\/wiki\/WebHelp:My_Computer#Folders\">Folders<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;<em>(My Computer on MediaMonkey 4 and older)<\/em> node.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you prefer to copy the files and organize them at the same time, use the Organize files function:\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Right-click on the selected files copy, right-click on them and select&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediamonkey.com\/wiki\/WebHelp:Changing_Filenames#Manually_Organize_Files\">Organize files<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;from the context menu.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enable the option&nbsp;<strong>Copy files to new destination based on file tags<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set the&nbsp;<strong>Destination<\/strong>&nbsp;to which the files should be copied and click&nbsp;<strong>OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Related:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Online Help: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mediamonkey.com\/wiki\/index.php\/WebHelp:iPod_Synchronization\/5.0\">Apple device sync instructions<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Online Help: <a href=\"http:\/\/Auto-Organize: http:\/\/www.mediamonkey.com\/wiki\/index.php\/WebHelp:Changing_Filenames\/5.0\">Auto-organize<\/a> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MediaMonkey for Windows is normally used to Sync content to iPhones, iPads, and iPods, but it can also be used to backup\/copy files from these devices to a PC.
