I don't... I finally cleared my database and re-imported all my media. It was quicker than going through and deleting all the unused artists manually.
I'll tell you how it happens, though: You rip music, and that creates a few track artists in your list. Then you Ctrl-L to download track data from Amazon, and many of those track artists get replaced, but they do NOT get deleted from the artist list. Over time, you wind up with a large number of artists not associated with any track.
You know they're there when you click on an artist in the Artist node and no tracks come up. When you use the maintenance function to delete unused artists, these orphaned track artists don't disappear.
