If you get these types of errors; process explorer will do the trick, and tell you which process is locking a file, and lets you kill that process.

It's free, and it's by Microsoft. Why they don't ship it with OSes is beyond me.

Before installing the recent version of MediaMonkey 3.0.1.1127, I thought it would be a good idea to do an uninstall of the older version first.
One file couldn't be deleted: DeskPlayer.dll. I had no chance to remove this file afterwards. I activated the hidden administrator account, set myself as owner, ...
The only chance I saw was to boot with Acronis DiskDirector and delete the file from there. This worked, but Vista refused to start properly afterwards!

So I did a completely fresh install of Vista (and made some disk images while installing new software).

I learned, that it's possible to install MediaMonkey 3 as long as I don't install NOD32 3.0 and Outpost Firewall Pro 2008. Disabling both doesn't make any difference, I always get the DeskPlayer.dll error message.

Possible solution: MediaMonkey can be installed and uninstalled in safe mode.

I did a filesearch over all drives and there was only one "deskplayer.dll" - the one in the MediaMonkey folder. So there shouln't be any other software using it. And what I didn't mention so far: my Vista installation is still "clean". I installed Vista, downloaded all Windows updates and installed only the most important software - no deinstallations so far.

Believe it or not, I'm extremely happy so far. For me it's the best Microsoft OS ever (and I'm using MS operating systems since MS-DOS 3.3 days).

Vista isn't Admin/no Admin, black and white, like other Windows OSes. Either way it's restrictive when it comes to system access, so if it doesn't reg the .dll properly, it's probably down to errors with the install script. Though I don't get it myself, with x64 Vista...

Maybe issues with the dll allready being registered somewhere else?

Okay thanks, that helped with enabling the Micro-Player in the toolbar.
But it's somewhat strange, that the installer although having admin rights wasn't able to register the dll.

Try go to the command line (with admin rights), move to folder with MM installation and then run command :
regsvr32 DeskPlayer.dll

I tried to install MM as administrator with enabled UAC.
After reading your post I temporary disabled UAC - but it didn't change anything.

That's strange. I'm have A64 and haven't problem in Vista64. What's your UAC state ?

Hi, I always get the following error message when trying to install MM3 RC5 or RC6:

My OS is Microsoft Vista x64 Ultimate.
If I hit "ignore", MediaMoneky is usable, but there's no option to enable the Microplayer in the toolbar.
