The approach that we're thinking of taking is to allow you to transcode files on the fly for portable audio device usage. That way there's no need to ever store duplicate copies on your main HD.

Timeframe: tbd (hopefully 2.4--I say hopefully because it's our intent to have a relatively short dev cycle for 2.4)

Regarding storing files in multiple formats:

I've started ripping all my CDs to FLAC on my PC HDD. This gives me a reference copy for listening to at home and using as a basis for lossy copies. (Please please please can I have FLAC encoding ) Using the mighty monkey I can transcode these FLAC files to just about any format I want. My iRriver H340 supports Ogg so I use that format for the big portable. I have a small flash player that I fill up to take running, but it doesn't support ogg, so I need to transcode to mp3, and raise the volume leveling.

(Other than FLAC encoding) MM does all this pretty nicely. But I'd like to have some concept of reference copies, so that I don't have tracks listed twice, At the moment I juggle files around a bit crazy and often make mistakes. Updating tags on my FLAC files (obviously) doesn't update the ogg/mp3 children. This would be really cool. I'd like to be able to have a report of which FLAC references have no ogg children on my iRiver.

It sounds like you guys are looking at this, any ideas on timeframe? I'd like to help test beta versions of this when it's available.

Another big missing feature

We've specced out this functionality but have decided not to include it in the 2.3 release in the interest of releasing sooner.

I expect that we'll add this in a future release for both synchronization and data cd burning.

It's an idea, but would require quit some hdd space. So I guess that few users would require this.

It has been requested before to be able to convert songs when synchronizing to a portable device. Some converts that can be considered:

- File format
- Bitrate
- Tags (deleting album art for example)

What about the idea of keeping an APE and an OGG version of every file. Is there a clever way of doing that without every file appearing in the library twice?

As far as I know are these things not supported. Both full FLAC and APE support are on the wishlist.

Am I missing it or is there no way to hold my library as a lossless format such as APE or FLAC and then have the files encoded as OGG or MP3 as part of the transfer to the device?

Alternatively is there a simple way of holding an OGG or MP3 mirror of the library?
