I'm awaiting an update too. I have downloaded the xls file with details and just want something to use those details in the tags. Thanks

That would be truly wonderful.

Amazon Tag from Web does have an option not to include Re-releases and imports, but it obviously doesn't sell a copy of Doors' The Soft Parade original release, so it's almost useless, and the Discogs script is still too buggy for normal use [if that one worked, I wouldn't mind flicking through 5-10 releases and choosing the first release of an album, but it doesn't really work].

So let me rephrase: truly wonderful that would be.

Any update on this?

Is there not a reliable database of Vinyl, 8-track, and Cassest releases on the web somewhere?
If there was would it be possible to write a script that checks each resource in chronological order so that it pulls out the earliest possible date?

Hi,

Due to the size of the data file would it not be better to build a database and query that? Using a database also opens up other possibilities.

Well my "Custom Report" can be used to create an XLS file - I presume reading from one would be similar to the code in there, but reversing the call which updates the cell. Then you need to find the track to update, which if you don't have the filename will need a progressive metadata search, something like I have in my "Recreate M3U" script.

Trixmoto, do you have anything as a basis for a script? I think I can get it done for myself by going around the barn, so to speak, by exporting my tag info to excel, making the changes, then importing it back in (basically using a utility I found to save your tag info in excel, and being able to go back and restore it). Doing that will not really help anyone else. I would like to try to do the script, but if it is beyond basic, I will never get it done. Any help would be appreciated.

You said an XML file but that was an XLS file. Not a problem, a script could still be written to import the information.

Sorry if that is a little odd looking, but copy and paste was the best thing I could think of, also I have come across a database on the internet that has every pop song since the 20's on it, again it is not everything anyone would want, but it is a good start.

There isn't currently a script, as no one's seen your data structure yet! One could certainly be written to import the data though, as long as there's enough to use to link to tracks in your database.

I have started an .xml file with year (charted) and peak on the charts. It is only for pop right now, and I only have 1970-2000 done, but my plan is to do other charts as well. Is there a script to improt this data into mm3? It would be great if there was a way for everyone to share this and add info to it. With just those 30 years and pop covered, I have about 14000 tracks. Obviously it would only help with charted songs, but it is a start.

And this is the obvious main benefit.

I'm sure the idea has floated around before, since it's such a simple, good idea, but it's obviously never gotten off the ground. I, for one, would be willing to help out however I could. I can't script (I write documentation for a living, not code :D) but I have plenty of song data to add.

I found 2 places to look for info with searchable databases. I'm not sure about the accuracy or if they would be useful for a script but in looking for these I had a thought. since no one has a good DB, why don't we make one?

The two I found are - These seem cool but lack lyrics and coverart
    http://umdmusic.com/
    http://www.onlinemusicdatabase.com/

Yeah I know huge job, Impossible to manage, hard to maintain, but the advantages would be outrageous! And we already have a lot of the info we would need to assemble it considering the user base of MM.
if we had a DB that included the info we want in one location we could do away with all this searching for sources and inputting info by hand and get back to listening to our music. LOL
    we would need to.....
    • Recruit a few scripters and developers.
To set standards and structure determine the info to be included.
      A DB on a server.
A script to access the DB.
A script to auto upload the user info to the DB from MM.
The ability to Gleam info from other sources to expand the DB.
I for one would like to at least try to do this and would put in time and energy towards it's development. even just a DB that included the basic info with coverart and the lyrics in one place would be a huge step forward. and if we set it up to cater to audiophiles from the beginning by including info like band members it could be a great tool

so go ahead shoot it down ...LOL but think about it for a second first. :)
