I haven't seen anything that does this but... It doesn't sound too awful. Let me give it a shot.

In the mean time, I use this mechanism to rediscover my music collection. It relies upon Last.fm's "similar artist" function to play tunes similar to the song you just listened to. If you set up the system like I describe it'll try and find things that you haven't rated. I have tons of fun with this.

I am still interested if it is possible to utilise (download and import) other peoples playlists to create your own playlists? Does anyone know if there has been any new ability to do this?

Besides AutoPlaylists there are some scripts for auto track selection for playback.

Yep - accuracy will be a problem given you may not have the music listed in another person's playlist and even if you do there may not be a perfect match in naming etc. I would be happy with anything above 50%. If seems I may be dreaming and that I will actually have to spend some time to create my own playlists . In the past I have used MusicIP Mixer to automatically create playlists which has been OK.

That is what I have previously looked for, then manually recreated the list. Now I see that you want the list created too.

I suggest the "cart" you have to get before the preverbial horse is finding a source of others peoples playlists. AFTER you have that you can start thinking about how to import those with ease if you need that. Me - I'd just like to see a good source of lists.

I wonder how easy this would be to create/how well it would work. With misspellings, multiple copies of the same tracks, etc. I just wonder if this is even feasible.

As for me I let MediaMonkey decide what I listen to through AutoPlaylists.

It may be that I am not understanding the sharing ability of playlists as I thought this would be a common activity/request for music fans. For instance your "Southern Fried Rock Playlist" has some great songs of which I have some but not all. In this case it would be good to be able to automatically 'import' your playlist and any songs I do not have are not included. Make sense? I understand that people will have different directory structures, different file naming standards etc but I am hoping there is a way to use the tag information to recreate (as close as possible) someone else's playlist as there are some great playlists out there at sources such as sharemyplaylists.com, www.playlist.com etc.

I too have spent some time rooting around on the Internet looking for a good source of playlists. There's not much that I found. Here's a few spots for you to look at - be sure to root around a bit at attached pages:

This last one is a favorite. It's the playlist for the satellite radios. On my MM I have playlists named "Ch. 15 Classic Rock" and such that are strictly based on playlists I created by lifting the song lists there.

Another problem that may be at play here is that others don't want to give up their carefully concocted lists. It's like people who don't want to give up the recipe to a dish they are "famous" for.

Maybe your posting will spur a bit long thread of fabulous playlists that everyone likes and they will all post their favorite playlists! In fact, the Mods should create another Forum heading in the "General Discussions" forum section now!

Thanks for your replies. I will give both ideas a go.

I was hoping to use other people's playlists also for moods/situations eg. dinner music, party music, gym music, 80's music, classic rock, chill out etc etc. Easier than doing it myself and also a way to know what interests other people.

Not a bad idea Botijo. Jonp you should try that.
I used to do something similar, but by using AutoDJ in MediaMonkey.

First, I create a set or filter for different kind of music, based on genres.
Then I lanch AutoDJ with that set and let it play for a day long, periodically saving the NowPlaying list to a Playlist named AutoDJ-2008-08-08-Genre.

The result is surprisingly good. After some tweaks like removing a track I don't like, or manually re-ordering 2 other, the playlist make henceforth part of my playlist collection.

Finally I can synchronize it to my external device.

Yes indeed it's a great way to rediscover our music.

I use another approach. I created myself an AutoPlaylist that gives me a small amount of Albums picked and ordered on random. As I synchronize this small set to my portable device, so I listen to different music I own every week. More or less, I am forced this way! The reason why I select complete albums is because I give credit to the people that arranged the album for me. I am not good at mixing songs from different sources.
I hope you like this idea. What you were proposing, well, it just works for "normal" people with "normal" pop music. Let's see, how many people would have heard of "Kaizers Orchestra"? That is a group from Norway, and even if they have sold more than 100.000 albums, most of Europe do not know of them. Where I am living now, you cannot get the CDs from anywhere. Even so, I had problems with getting the CDs from Amazon Germany. I did not choose to go into shops in Norway because of the language barrier. So I do not expect many peoples' playlist to have "Kaizers Orchestra" in there. If you happen to have even stranger albums in your collection, like samplers or your friends' CDs, well the chance to get somebody else with those songs in the playlist is almost non-existant.
Like I have said, if you need to rediscover your own albums, choose AutoPlaylists with random album sort. That works for me.
