No. I am simply running MM as a different user.

Chris,

do you mean run as Administrator makes MM run more slowly?

New info: I am now using MM launched by "Run As...." and I find the problem is specific to this case i.e. Regular-run MM is fine.

Plus I see variation which fits with Miz's character conversion theory.

Part of the trouble here may be that chrisjj also uses MP3Tag. You have to specify what you want your tags written as in that program, and if you're like me with a select few with foreign characters, you're forced to set that program to write UTF-8. MediaMonkey however has the ability to determine what is needed, so ones without characters out of the norm, it will write in regular ol' ISO, while using UTF for those it needs it on. Thus, if you tag files with MP3Tag and it writes them all as UTF, when you do as suggested in MediaMonkey, it's going to re-write those tags to what is needed (thus converting UTF over to ISO).

I tested on a set of 14 files, since it's the album I had up. It took a couple seconds to run through them, but this album had been written with MP3Tag. Re-doing the same process after, results in the bar going from beginning to end almost instantaneously. May not be the entire problem, but this could suggest while this action seems instantaneous for some of you, while takes a bit for him.

EDIT: Correction, MM uses ACSII (which I believe is the same as saying ISO) and they both use UTF-16 (not 8)

Rusty,

The issue here is actually that he isn't tagging at all. Just open the track properties of a set of tracks and click OK. No changes should mean no updates being made to the tracks either.

chrisjj,

A debug log might be helpful here. I can't replicate this at all--tagging 25 MP3 tracks takes ~1s on my machine.

I just tried selecting 193 tracks and followed your steps and 34 seconds later the "tagging" toobar was finished, this on a Vista machine with a NTFS internal hd. I also tried selecting 294 tracks and followed your steps and 77 seconds later the "tagging" toobar was finished, this on a XP machine with a NTFS internal hd. I can understand your frustration especially since you have not made any changes. :(

Have you tried to maintain the database to see if makes a difference?

In itself the tagging should be immediate as no tagging would need to be done as no changes were made. Despite that MediaMonkey does show it's tagging the files.

As I already said:
Select 20 tracks, SHIFT-ENTER, OK, then watch the progress bar dribble along. :(

The files are MP3s on a regular NTFS internal HD.
> What properties are you changing

None.

> does it matter which ones or is all tagging slow for you??

All tagging I have tried is slow for me. I tried the above with different tracks and got the same result.

I've seen occasions where tagging is very slow, but otherwise it's faster than MediaMonkey 3.0. I haven't seen something that could be causing the slow tagging, but I do have a large database on an old PC with slow hard drive.

You have to be doing something if you are "tagging", so in order to test and help you, can you tell me what you are "tagging"?? What properties are you changing, does it matter which ones or is all tagging slow for you??

Mine too. But I fail to seethe relevence. The tagging occurs only when the box is closed.

> are you doing anything else besides the instructions you listed above?

Since launching the program ;), No :(

Chris:

My properties box is popping up instantly, are you doing anything else besides the instructions you listed above? I tried with 20, 100 and 250 tracks selected.

This or another recent upgrade has made tagging very slow! approx 2s per track.

E.g. Select 20 tracks, SHIFT-ENTER, OK, then watch the progress bar dribble along. :(

The files are MP3s on a regular NTFS internal HD.

What's happened???
