WMA play fails on vanilla Win XP SP2:
1 Make a fresh default installation of Win XP SP2 and MM and launch MM
2 File | Open URL or File, enter
C:\WINDOWS\system32\oobe\images\title.wma , press OK.
Expected: track plays.
Observed: track does not play.
The expectation is based on
http://www.mediamonkey.com/download/
"Installing MediaMonkey
MediaMonkey ... has been tested on Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Vista." from which the user may reasonably assume that "Windows XP" meets the minimum requirement, and hence so does "Windows XP SP2".
Workaround: run
http://www.mediamonkey.com/sw/WMFDist11 ... 86-ENU.exe
Note: This is not a circumstance covered by
http://tinyurl.com/p4pj3s "WMA Tracks can't Burn, Play, Tag, Convert, Sync or be Analysed", specifically not either of:
Faulty Windows Media Components can cause WMA files to fail ...
It is most likely caused by outdated or corrupted Windows Media
EDIT: Seems likely related to
http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... =7&t=38768
EDIT:
http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... 30#p216530 seems to be the same problem and workaround but with MP3.
EDIT: I discovered this report had been subject-tagged "[#5571]", whereas 5571
http://www.ventismedia.com/mantis/view.php?id=5571 is a different issue, so I have removed that tag.
