There are various bugs with the Virtual CD in MediaMonkey 3.1 and 3.1.1. MediaMonkey 3.1.2 will contain fixes and various of them are included in the current beta: http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewto ... 93#p222793

The problem occurs not just with the song currently playing. It occurs with any VirtualCD song that's in the "Now Playing" view. An changes made to the tags of a VirtualCD song that's on the "Now Playing" list is not saved.

maybe not related, but I haven't found any description of my problem yet:

I have ripped a few of my CD's to my external HDD at home. I edited the track properties, so all tags are edited properly the way I want (Artist, Album Artist, Track, Title...). So far so good, I play them, pause, stop, next song etc... All tags remain the way I editied and saved them.
This morning, I copied some of them to the Virtual CD (HDD inside my laptop), to be able to play at work. What I'm suddenly seeing now is that, when a track gets played in the playlist, some tags are updated. More precisely, the Album Artist and the Artist tags are deleted, the Track Nr tag gets updated (for example, I had track "02" before, now it's updated to track "2", so without the leading zero). It seems that all other tags (Title, Genre, Date) are kept.

I have MM 3.1.0.1256, Windows XP SP3. Also the same properties set: under Options/Library/Tags & Playlists I have "Update tags" and "Modify Timestamp" checked on.
But, when I try to change the tags again to the way it was before, I see them updated (whether they are playing or not) in MM, but I don't see the timestamp in my explorer getting changed to the date and time when I changed the tags. Except when I change a tag to something it wasn't like before.

Hitting F5 anytime, seems to restore all the changes that MM has made in the main window (deletion/changing of those tags is undone, so restored to that way I want), although in the "now playing" window, the tags are still changed.
Shutting down and restarting doesn't seem to have influenced the tags, they are all restored like it was before.

I hope this is not too confusing

To replicate non-persistent tags:

1) Select VirtualCD tree node
2) Start playing a song from VirtualCD.
3) Edit the properties of the song: rate it, change the notes, etc.
4) Check if tracks properties are saved.

At this point the tags should be persistent, but aren't. Examining the actual song file on disk will show the timestamp hasn't changed. Hitting F5 will cause the changes to vanish.

Notes:

• If the song is not in VirtualCD the problem doesn't occur.
• If I refresh (F5) between step 2 and step 3 the problem doesn't occur.
• If I hit stop between step 2 and step 3 the problem does occur.

Not sure I follow all steps correctly but I can't replicate. Can you please give exact step on how works and how can I replicate non persistent tags?

You're right: if I stop the song then change it, the change still gets lost. So the problem is when it's a VirtualCD song that's currently loaded.

I also notice that if I refresh (F5) before making the change, the change gets kept - even if the song is loaded or playing.

stop the song then change it and see what happens. if it changes the info then great, if not then its not the playing of it that is causing trouble. its the being the currently loaded song thats causing the trouble.

I've been losing metadata updates for a while: I change a song's metadata and then come back to it later (or even immediately as it turns out) and the change has vanished. I've finally tracked down the conditions under which this occurs.

I'm using MediaMonkey 3.1.0.1256 on Windows XP SP3, the internal player, and under Options/Library/Tags & Playlists I have "Update tags" and "Modify Timestamp" checked on. Normally, when I update a song's Properties, as soon as I click Ok the tags are updated (or queued for update and immediately processed). I can verify the timestamp of the actual MP3 file has changed on the hard drive.

However, IF the song is a VirtualCD song AND the song is currently playing, the tag isn't updated. Ever. If I immediately hit F5 to refresh, the change vanishes before my eyes. The database hasn't been updated, and the file's timestamp doesn't change on disk.

Everything works fine if the song is not in VirtualCD, whether it's playing or not. Everything works fine if the song is not playing, whether it's in VirtualCD or not. The problem only occurs if both conditions are present.

Does that make sense?
