Perhaps if a script can call specific tracks from an m3u by track # this can be scripted. The script would need to export each playlist to an m3u and then work from there to build a new playlist based on the criteria the user inputs.

After poking around a bit, I don't think scripting will do what I want. The solution I believe is to have auto-playlists be able to call other auto-playlists. For example, you could tell an auto-playlist to insert the first 5 songs from "Modern Rock" and then insert the first song from "Classic Rock", then the next 5 songs from "Modern Rock, etc.. until a set amount of playing time is filled. This type of functionality would make MM the ideal radio playlist generator as you could fill a time slot with music, then weather, then news, then jingle, and so on and so forth.

Just have a look into the scripting forum and search. There are several around. For example RadioFreeMonkey which seems quite cool.

Just have a look ...

Do you know of any existing scripts that generate playlists? I haven't done any programming in years but perhaps I could get something going from an example.

Yeah, you could write a script that pulled tunes into a list based on some category, like Occasion or one of the Custom fields.

Then you could generate the list and export it to an m3u. It should be pretty straightforward.

How bout incorporating something like this? Could something like this be scripted?
