Batch auto-tag from Amazon?

If it's possible to better the tagging process from Amazon I say do it

If you have a few files that could be from anywhere, the program tries to match a few letters in the title to something completely different

There should be fields that you can search under instead of just the 1 bar. If you put a band name in the search, you'll get albums and albums containing that name and then you have to sift through and find your band then try to match the title with the correct album. TAKES TOO LONG

An advanced search would be nice. Maybe just searching by title or JUST by artist for instance. The search should have every field of tagging that's present in auto-tagging from filename and auto-organising

Could you imagine the results you would get if you had that same bar for this forums search utility? lol

My recent experience tagging a couple of thousand CDs that I ripped some time back along with an equal amount of electronic media: Amazon returned a wholly incorrect result well over 1/3 of the time even when the track / artist / title infomation was mostly or completely correct already. Of the results that choose the proper artist/album about half don't recognize some of the tracks. Given the extreme unreliability of the Amazon queries this feature, though it sounds wonderful, would screw up most people's collections to the point where fixing the problems created by auto-tagging might well require more (perhaps *far* more) time than simply tagging each individual album manually. As a former software developer I can state with some certainty that it is normally not a wise choice to spend limited development resources implementing features that cannot be made to work reliably. My guess is that's the reason this won't be attempted in MM.

On the contrary, Amazon has genre info at the bottom of every album page where they suggest browsing by similiar 'styles'. I would suggest using the one that appears most often. For example, Bonnie Raitt's album "Soul's Alike" is listed in the following categories.

Styles > Classic Rock > Album-Oriented Rock (AOR)
Styles > Pop > Adult Contemporary > General
Styles > Rock > Country Rock
Styles > Rock > Blues Rock
Styles > Rock > General

Since "Rock" appears the most, the songs on this album would be tagged as "Rock". Multiple genres of course would make this task unnecessary.

I don't think Amazon distinguishes much (if at all) between genres ...

Well, since MM already does most of this, I figured it wouldn't be much to implement. Also, I have looked for something like this and haven't found anything satisfactory. While there are many mp3 tagging programs that do batch processing and have amazon, freedb, cddb, discogs, etc lookup, none I have found do both. Music Brainz comes close but it does very little besides find the album. If they would include Year and Genre info, it would be ideal but I haven't seen much development for it.

Also, I suggest including Genre info from Amazon if batch processing from there ever becomes feasible.

Hi onkel_enno, that's why it is called "wishlist"

You cannot expect that everybody knows what such wishes mean in programming time effort.

I guess the MM programmers can sort out quite well what is suitable, feasible and most useful.

Everybody wants to have everything in MM.
Nobody thinks about the energy which is required to include all the algorithms of all mp3-tools in the world

Every day I must read here new, sometimes silly Wishes.
Why don't they do s.th by themselve, only one time.
Why should the developers always do the work for all the lazy people?

If I were a MM-Developer, I would do nothing anymore, except the things which are really new and useful.

Only my thoughts!

Well, could be, but personally I prefer better and more reliable results. If tagging from Amazon is made more automatic, user could easily miss that some results aren't correct.

There are several tools in the net which do exactly that. Google a little and you'll find s.th.

It would be nice if the auto-tag from Amazon would work on multiple albums. Just sort by artist and album and then feed each album into Amazon one at a time with a separate box for hits, misses and maybies.
