Wavpack Support

Hi,

I installed the actual version of MM yesterday the first time. I installed also the winamp-wv-plugin like recommended (actual version 2.8a). But I can see the wavpack tags and covers from some files but some files do not show the same tags and cover arts.

I tried it with TagScanner and foobar. Here everything is ok.

Any idea?

I'd given up on Wavpack playback with MM years ago.

I tried your suggestion and it worked for me. Somehow I already had winamp.exe in my media monkey folder although I don't recall installing it, I'm a long time user but do not play with settings or scripts much.

It is perfectly possible to manage .wv files from MM.
Just follow these instructions:

If there is some Delphi Example how to read WavPack I would like to see it and in that case there is big Possibility that I'll do Unofficial Format Plugin Support for it.

I've already made ApeV2 in FLAC and APE, why not WavePack Also.

WavePack is not high on Wishlist and if someone help, I think that it will move up on list.

The developers of both FLAC and Wavpack hang out at Hydrogenaudio.org if you ever want to get in touch with them (besides going to their respective sites). Great place for any discussion involving codecs actually, as many other developers hang out there (LAME, Nero's AAC and MP4, Optimfrog, etc) as well as many other helpful audio enthusiasts.

I use MM for all my managment and winamp as the player, the winamp plugin in_wv.dll also works in MM.

I don't use wavpack as I have used ape until recently and now use flac. I saw this discussion and thought I would try it out. It plays in winamp and in the MM player and the library recognises it.

I ripped and coded a file to wavpack, the file is about 7% smaller than flac about same as ape.

Yeah, I've come to prefer WavPack after hours of reading and testing, but the only thing holding me back from jumping on the bandwagon is MediaMonkey's innability to play the format.

I love MM, with only Foobar2000 really competing (in my mind) on the power level. I might just stop transferring any more albums to my collection until a WavPack plugin is developed for MM. I don't have the time or energy to do everything twice (or more).

So, in finalising, I'd love to see the priority level for this raised from "low", which is currently quite disheartening.

Wavpack can do everything that FLAC can do (more actually, if you include lossy) and decoding/encoding performance is very similar, except that Wavpack has better compression. That adds up to many gigabytes of space saved depending on how many albums you have. For example, my collection used to be in FLAC and I'm now into the teens already with just over 450 albums. See, I've done my research too, so you can trust me just as much as Insominac hehe.

I'd love to see wavpack encoded files become usable in MediaMonkey. After experimenting with some lossy formats, I've come to the conclusion that lossless compression will soon be the next trend in encoder choice. This is bound to be helped by the increase of cheap, large format hard discs.

The choices of encoder are still quite extensive, with the pack seemingly narrowed down to 3 major contenders: FLAC, Monkeys Audio, and WavPack. Hydrogen Audio has a comparison table for all lossless formats:

Currently FLAC seems the most popular, but WavPack is gaining due to better compression.

I'd like to see Wavepack support as well - if noting else the developers can add this to their list. Maybe in 2.6??

Use what you want to. There is no "better" lossless encoder, and debates of that type are uninteresting.

I second that wish. From what little I know, it seems wavpack is a win-win format. Support is available or in the works for Rockbox and my Iriver h120. I understand it works really well on Rockbox. I was going to start saving all of my music as wavpack files, but I also want to use MediaMonkey. Hmmm....another dilemma.

ok, as far as I can tell from a search, no one else has asked for this, which will probably mean that it won't come soon if at all, but I'm putting in my vote for a MM version to support wavpack.

http://www.wavpack.com - open source, fast, APE V2 tags, lossy hybrid mode, and in high mode compression that rivals that of Monkey's Audio normal mode, and blows FLAC compression away. Winamp and Foobar plugins, coming hardwrae support, the works. It's a well developed codec and it is gaining popularity.

After some quick testing, on my library of 300 CD's, I'll be saving about 3 gigs of space when all the conversions are done, with music from several different genres.

And it doesn't hurt that the developer is a great guy.
