Thanks Lowlander, I'm using the 1385 build so it can't be that. From what I can see it's something to do with the "Enable Grouping (Artwork views)" in Collection Options for columns. When this is turned on, the first Artist that begins with 'The' is where ALL the artists beginning with 'T' are sorted. (I have MM options set to 'Ignore prefixes when sorting by Artist: the' but it doesn't seem that "Enable grouping" isn't taking this into account.) So my first one is The Angels which means T is sorted after A ie: A, T, B, C, D, E, etc. If I remove this file from the library my next artist is The Buggles and then T is sorted after B ie: A, B, T, C, D, E, etc. When "Enable Grouping" is turned off the videos sort as they should by ignoring the 'The' - The Angels in A, The Buggles in B, etc. I hope this makes sense and sheds some more light on the problem.
